Rocket is a minimalist macOS utility that works in the background and offers you the option to use Slack-style emoji in any app installed on your Mac. You get to browse the emoji collection by using a trigger key and the name of the figurine you want to use.

Once launched, the Rocket application resides in your status bar in order to provide access to the Preferences window and help you deal with quitting or updating the application. The menulet does not take a lot of space but cannot be disabled altogether either.

Nonetheless, to use the app, you must employ the predefined trigger key (“:”) in any application that supports emoji. Rocket will bring up a search bar where you get to preview and select the graphic you want to use.

Keep in mind that you also have to type the name of the emoji design: Rocket will bring up other related pictures, but it needs at least one character to start the search. Of course, you can find the entire list of emoji designs online.

Via the Rocket Preferences you get to switch the app’s interface theme (light or dark), modify the trigger key, and update the list of apps within which Rocket is disabled by default. The original configuration ignores Slack, HipChat, Xcode, and the Terminal app.

Rocket offers you the possibility to rely on a custom emoji collection and allows you to use custom GIFs and other image files. Just direct the app to the folder holding the graphic content and Rocket will quickly add each file to the collection.

Bottom line, Rocket works in any OS X application that provides support for emoji and offers you the possibility to give an original style to your conversations or documents without wasting time looking for images online.
