The vast majority of people have switched to movie streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime, and few of us still watch movies and TV shows on DVD or Blu-ray discs.
However, in both cases, you might find yourself in need of a subtitle file if the disc or streaming service does not provide one in your language, if the caption is not accurately synchronized to the movie, or if there is no subtitle available.
There are tools which can help you in such cases, one of them being Submarine, a minimalist and straightforward macOS application designed with a single goal in mind: to make it as easy and as fast as possible to find and download subtitles for any movie or TV show using the opensubtitles.org subtitle hosting platform.
Using it to pinpoint and download captions for any of your movies or TV shows is as simple as drag and dropping the video file onto Submarine's window or entering its name of in the search field at the top of the main screen and hitting Enter.
Moreover, if you require Submarine to search for and display subtitles only for a limited set of languages or even for a single one, you can pick the ones you want it to find by opening the Preferences window and clicking the " + " drop-down menu.
Once the search process has finished, Submarine lists all the subtitles it found in opensubtitles.org's database and allows you to download any one of them by selecting it and clicking the "Download" button in the bottom left corner of the window.
As a downside, even though we had them installed and running on our test Mac, we weren't able to use the "Send to" drop-down menu to send any of the downloaded subtitles to either one of the Playr, Submerge 3 nor iSubtitle apps Submarine is supposed to support.
Everything considered, if you're in need of a fast way of downloading subtitles for your favorite DVD or Blu-ray movies or TV shows, Submarine is an excellent tool to have on your Mac.
Even more, if you're using a streaming service to get your daily entertainment, you can also load custom subtitles you downloaded using Submarine if the ones available are not up to par.
