The VirtualKeyboard project aims to provide a customizable virtual keyboard that can be either used as a standalone utility or integrated into other audio applications as a plug-in. You can configure the keyboard to work with Cubase, Logic Pro 9 or X, or Ableton.

Note that you can play the virtual keyboard as soon as you load a sound pack and that you can also open MIDI audio files in the built-in player and get control over the playback.

In the VirtualKeyboard main window, you get to see the keyboard together with the color palette used to highlight the keys that are pressed. To get started, you need to select the sounds you want to use from a small drop-down menu, but keep in mind that the app preserves the settings between sessions.

You get to decide if you want to mute certain channels and use different color labels for the notes, include fade effects, activate soft, sostenuto, or sustain pedals, adjust the key’s width, and so on. You can play the keyboard using your mouse or your computer keyboard.

Within the VirtualKeyboard main window, you get to load MIDI files and start or pause the playback with ease. At the same time, you can adjust the playback speed and set both the input and output audio sources.

You get to change the sample rate, the audio buffer size and define the active MIDI inputs. Via the app’s settings you can also toggle the computer keyboard control, the keyboard type, and the note distribution.

Bottom line, VirtualKeyboard can work as a standalone virtual MIDI instrument, or you can integrate into an audio application as a plug-in. You get control over the keys size and notation and load multiple sound packs, while the built-in player can deal with MIDI files.
