The development team behind the XQuartz Project has released a new version of the X.org X window system with code tweaks that fix issues with various applications.

Also referred to as X11, XQuartz has been the default X11 implementation since the release of OS X 10.8 aka Mountain Lion. It is still used to run old versions of GIMP (the powerful image manipulation program), OpenOffice, and other applications.

Today, XQuartz 2.7.5 is available with various fixes. The software should run more smoothly on computers with discreet graphics, while support for 15-bit visuals (which no longer work in Mountain Lion) has been removed.

A rendering regression seen in pixman by reverting to old rendering code paths is also addressed, and the minimum requirement is now OS X 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard). Download XQuartz 2.7.5, which will update your display environment variable to point to XQuartz.app (rather than X11.app).
