Printix Client Changelog

What's new in Printix Client 1.3.221.0

Aug 24, 2018
  • New features:
  • Printix App for Android. Release documents with the new native Printix App available for download on Google Play Store. Users who do not want to install the native app can continue to use the web app that runs in a web browser on your smartphone, tablet or computer. Compared to the web app, the native app offers these advantages: Only sign in once and Integrated QR code scanning. A Printix App for iOS is also available.
  • Normally, if the destination printer supports PDF, documents printed through Printix for Chromebook and print anywhere documents, are sent directly to the printer. Now you can check the new print queue setting Process PDF to force the document to be processed according to the print queue’s print driver configuration and thereby finishing options.
  • Printix for Chromebook now supports printing multiple Copies, selection of Paper size and Two-sided printing. Requires Printix Client version 1.3.221.0.
  • Support for macOS 10.14 Mojave.
  • From the Printix web site (printix.net) you can now Sign in to your Printix Home. You will be asked to pick from a list of Printix Homes, if you are a member of multiple Printix Homes. Use this method if you have forgotten the URL to your Printix Home (example: acme.printix.net).
  • Improvements:
  • The Help icon in the top right side of Printix Administrator now has blue background to make it more visible. Click it to display a short context sensitive description (in English) and links to relevant sections in the Printix Administrator Manual.
  • Deployment of Printix Client with Intune is now easier to configure as the Software page now allows you to copy MSI arguments to the clipboard. See also the updated section: How to deploy Printix Client with Intune.
  • The Print drivers page has been improved for clarity and navigation. Details about the Default/selected print driver is now shown in a separate box and you can click Back to return to the Print queue properties page.
  • The conversion of print queues can now be tested for a selected computer, before it is enabled on a per network or global basis. Just click the Convert print queues button on the Print queues tab on the Computer properties page.
  • Printix Configurator now also support MAC address format where colons (:) are used for separation. From this version on, it will offer to update itself to the latest approved version.
  • Page counting for Epson inkjet printers using ESC/P-R.
  • Fixes:
  • On VMware Horizon VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) the Printix Client would show the Sign in dialog repeatedly. See also: How to include Printix Client in a VMware Horizon image.
  • When printing via the Printix Redirector the name of the document is now carried through.
  • On the Subscription page, the Invoice tab now reflects that charging is based on number of users that are active, rather than the number of users who prints. This is in accordance with the Printix Pricing effective since 2018-06-01.
  • Known issues:
  • On Windows, when you open the Control Panel, Features and Programs and click Printix Client the Product version is that of the initially installed Printix Client.

New in Printix Client 1.3.173.0 (Jul 7, 2018)

  • New features:
  • New setting to support print server migration. When a printer is registered without a print queue, the system will create a default print queue and name the print queue the same as the printer model name. When migrating print servers, you can now disable this behavior by unchecking Create default print queue on the Settings page.
  • See also: Implementation phase setup.
  • Improvements:
  • Download section moved from the bottom of the Printix Administrator Settings page to a dedicated Software page.
  • Printix for Chromebook is now available from the Software page in Printix Administrator. If your G Suite is used by multiple Printix Homes, users will be asked to pick a Printix Home.
  • Possible to Search for printers by address. The search algorithm has also been improved.
  • Printix Client language. Language is now inherited from the computer OS. If the OS language is not among the supported languages, then it will use the language saved as part of the user's profile in Printix. If there is no language saved in the user's profile, then it will use English.
  • Page counting for Canon UFR II print drivers.
  • Check Hide printer ID in Printix Client on the Settings page if you do not want the three-letter printer ID (ASD, BNM, ...) to appear on the Printix Client Printers page.
  • Printix Redirector now also works with Ringdale Follow Me.
  • Fixes:
  • In networks using Zscaler proxy service the Printix Service process could in very rare situations consume almost all of the computer's CPU.
  • Installation of print driver: Oce VarioPRINT 115 PS3 NL.
  • If Add print queue automatically was checked the print queue would be added to the computer even when the computer was not on the same network as the printer.

New in Printix Client 1.3.144.0 (May 25, 2018)

  • GDPR - Changes made to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation:
  • On the Subscription page there is a new Legal documents tab. Here it is possible to accept the Data Processing Agreement and see other legal documents.
  • Users with the Role as System manager will by default receive Notifications by email about Data breach and Updated legal documents. System managers can opt out of these notifications on the Setup tab on the User properties page.
  • On the History page you can now see commands issued remotely by Printix support.
  • Users are now deleted permanently when they are not part of any Printix Homes.
  • New features:
  • Printix for Chromebook. Allows users to select Printix printers that support PDF and are configured to print Via the cloud. The document is uploaded to the Printix Cloud and then forwarded to a Printix Client computer on the printer's network. The document remains secure during the transfer over the Internet as the document itself and the communication are both encrypted. You must use your G Suite domain's business address with Gmail. Available as an extension for Google Chrome version 63 or later.
  • Possible to edit the Location of multiple printers.
  • Data can be extracted and then be used with for example Microsoft Power BI to build reports. Requires application development knowledge and experience with PowerShell and RESTful programming. See also: How to extract data.
  • Improvements:
  • On the Print queue properties page's Computers tab it is now possible to Search on computers and you can Delete the print queue on the selected computers.
  • If the Groups page is empty it shows the text: Only groups added to print queues will appear.
  • Instead of using the printer model as the default value for the printer name, the Printix Client can use alternatives. For example, the printer’s hostname (works for HP) or the printer’s device name (works for Lexmark). Requires that Printix Support enable populatePrinterName for you.
  • Fixes:
  • Print driver configurations was not always uploaded and applied.
  • Print driver configuration enhanced to support stapling for the print driver Canon iR-ADV C3325/3330 UFR II.
  • Sometimes print queues were missing from the Printers dialog in Printix Client. Now the Printix Client ensures it always has information about the printer that is referenced by the print queue. Restarting the Printix Service or signing out and in to the Printix Client resolved the issue.
  • If a computer was restarted while using a gateway that was not part of a network, the Printix Client did not reflect it was on an Unknown network, as it was supposed to do.
  • Printix Client's parser module modified to resolve "out of memory" that was seen when printing with the Windows print driver: Brother HL-L6200DW series.
  • Known issues:
  • Printix for Chromebook does not support printing multiple copies.
  • Printers registered before 2017-10-17 are listed without a Created date on the Printers page in Printix Administrator.
  • On Windows, when you open the Control Panel, Features and Programs and click Printix Client the Product version is that of the initially installed Printix Client.
  • Translations are made with the use of Google Translate. Please inform us about improvements for translations.

New in Printix Client 1.3.111.0 (Apr 14, 2018)

  • New features:
  • Printix for Chromebook (Beta test). You must use your G Suite domain's business address with Gmail. Available as an extension for Google Chrome version 63 or later. Allows users to select Printix printers that support PDF and are configured to print Via the cloud. The document is uploaded to the Printix Cloud and then forwarded to a Printix Client computer on the printer's network. The document remains secure during the transfer over the Internet as the document itself and the communication are both encrypted.
  • On a per group membership basis you can now control these print queue settings: Exclusive access and Add print queue automatically. You will find these on the Groups tab on the Print queue properties page. To better handle organizations with 1000s of groups, you are now indirectly selecting which groups should be synchronized as you Add groups to a print queue to enable Exclusive access and/or Add print queue automatically for the members of those groups. Only the selected groups are synchronized, and only changes are synchronized.
  • Support for Google groups. Use Google groups to control access to print queues and deploy these based on users' group membership.
  • Update 2018-04-13: Enabling Google groups is not possible, as an update is pending approval by Google. Approval is expected to occur within a few days.
  • The Printers page now loads faster and support these Filters: Network and Created. Use the Created filter to see printers added within the previous 3, 6, 12 or 24 hours. You can sort on ID, Printer name, Created and Location.
  • Improvements:
  • Printix Cloud now communicates directly with the Printix Client on each computer. Before communication was via select Printix Clients that acted as proxy. As a result, configuration data changes are now being pushed almost without delay to Printix Clients. Furthermore, documents can now be released from a computer on an Unknown network. The new version no longer uses TCP port 21337.
  • Working with print drivers and print driver configurations is now easier with the new controls on the Drivers tab.
  • Update print queues on single or multiple computers with a single click.
  • Because the drivers uploaded to your Printix driver store are compatible across the different macOS editions (10.13, ..., 10.8), the Drivers page now just has one generic macOS.
  • On macOS the MacService is now renamed to the more appropriate PrintixService. That way, a search on Printix in the macOS Activity Monitor will show both processes: Printix Client and Printix Service.
  • When you release anywhere documents, your choice of printers is now filtered to show only printers reachable from the computer where the document resides. If the selected printer does not support PDF, you may be asked to Select print queue (if there is more than one).
  • Fixes:
  • Unexpected appearance of the Printix Client Sign in dialog. Under special and rare conditions, where the computer had been without network connection for at least 10 minutes, the user's access token would unintentionally expire, and this again would cause Printix Client to unexpectedly present the Sign in dialog to the user. If the user closed the dialog, without signing in, printing to the computer's Printix printers would stop working. Printing would start working again when the user signed in to Printix Client.
  • Changes to a user's group membership is now picked up dynamically by the Printix Client.
  • Convert print queues per network had reversed logic. If you checked Yes, it would not convert, and if you clicked No, it would convert. The global setting worked as intended.
  • During conversion of print queues multiple undesired copies of print queues could be created if Printer name without printer ID was selected.
  • An uninstall of Printix Client now converts all Printix print queues back to normal network print queues. Before print queues only got restored if: 1) The print queue pointed to a printer on the same network as the computer, or 2) The print queue was configured to print via the cloud.
  • On the Print queues page, Filter: Computers 0 - X, sometimes appeared unintentionally.
  • If TLS 1.0 was disabled on the computer, Printix Client would be stuck in: Connecting to service. Seen at customer with Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • Printix Redirector now also works when documents are printed via the cloud.
  • Print queues pointing to Printix printers are now registered for both Windows and macOS. Before print queues were not registered for macOS, unless they were printing through Printix.

New in Printix Client 1.2.238.0 (Jan 3, 2018)

  • New features:
  • Remote print queue management: In Printix Administrator open the new Print queues tab on the Computer properties page to see what print queues are installed and managed by Printix on the computer. From here you can remotely Add, Update and Delete Printix managed print queues on the computer.
  • Convert print queues can now be controlled per network.
  • Improvements:
  • New Create print queue dialog with the option to check if the created print queue should be Active or not.
  • Fixes:
  • If a proxy server was used to access the Internet, the Printix Client would not always detect the new proxy settings as the computer connected to another network. Work around involved restarting the computer or the Printix Service. New proxy settings are now detected in a few seconds.
  • Shared print queues (Example: Reception on SERVER) installed on Windows computers are now converted if there is an identically named print queue (Reception) and a registered printer (ASD) in Printix. The printer name of the converted print queue is without the last part (on SERVER) and will typically have the three-letter printer ID at the end (Reception ASD). Print queues are still not converted on Windows servers.
  • On macOS some print drivers (Kyocera Taskalfa 5551ci and RICOH MP C3003) did not install.
  • When a Windows printer was installed, the part of the print driver configuration settings that were configured via the Printing defaults button on the Advanced tab (pre-printer defaults), was not applied consistently.
  • The process of adding a print driver configuration did not allow sufficient time for the print driver to be installed, and therefore you could experience that the Print driver configuration dialog would close unexpectedly. A second attempt would normally succeed, as the print driver would now be installed on the computer.
  • For the Brother HL-L5200DW series print driver, the tray selection was unintentionally reset to auto after a restart of the computer. This happened if the print queue was configured in Printix Administrator to Print in black by default.
  • Computers' virtual network adapters with empty IPv6 addresses (::) are no longer reported to Printix Cloud, as this could cause computers to be deleted because of non-unique MAC addresses. Seen at customer using Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client.
  • Printing via Lexmark X790 Series PS3 driver on Windows 10 did not work because of issue with parser.
  • The number of Computers that have a print queue installed and managed by Printix was not always calculated correctly.
  • The Save-O-Meter showed percentages which were too high. Algorithm has been adjusted.
  • Known issues:
  • Printers registered before 2017-10-17 are listed without a Created date on the Printers page in Printix Administrator.
  • On Windows, when you open the Control Panel, Features and Programs and click Printix Client the Product version is that of the initially installed Printix Client. The current version number can be seen on the Printix Client Diagnostics dialog.
  • Translations are made with the use of Google Translate. Please inform us about improvements for translations.

New in Printix Client 1.2.182.0 (Nov 16, 2017)

  • Improvements:
  • After a completed Discover printers you will see either "Found N printers" or "Found no new printers". Click OK to close the dialog.
  • The Microsoft account used to Enable Azure/Office 365 authentication is no longer required to have an email configured.
  • If you are already signed in to Printix Client, the menu will show your name. Example: Sign in as another user (Signed in as John Smith).
  • With iOS 11 or later, you can use the camera app to scan the QR code on the printer ID sign. The printer ID sign no longer includes the name of the user who printed it. When releasing anywhere documents you can select printer regardless of the printer's status.
  • Fixes:
  • Sign in on Azure AD domain joined Windows 10 computers is now automatic again. It got broken in Printix Client version 1.2.88.0 (2017-09-15) and required the user to click Sign in with Microsoft.
  • Releasing print anywhere documents did not work if processing was required and was done by an existing print queue. The Printix App would be stuck in the state Working on it. Releasing print anywhere documents did work if the print queue had to be added. It also worked if the printer supported PDF printing.
  • Print driver configurations that were automatically registered as a result of Discover printers, could not be modified and was not being applied when the corresponding print queue was installed.
  • The Printix Client will now say No printers to add when there is no printers to be added. Before it would say Setup is not complete.
  • On macOS, when you print to a Printix Anywhere printer, the printing options now include the checkbox: Black & White. To take effect remove and add the anywhere printer on the computer.
  • On macOS, the documents printed to a Printix Anywhere printer are now tracked correctly. Before they were always tacked as 1 page.
  • On macOS, if you installed Printix Client again after having uninstalled it, the previously managed print queues would not be converted as expected. To work around this, you would have to remove the print queues and then add them again. Now those print queues become managed again after a reinstallation.
  • On macOS, in rare situations, where the Printix Client was simultaneously busy with adding and converting printers, there was a risk of it not being in sync with the macOS printing system. This could lead to a printer being removed from the Printers list in the Printers & Scanners dialog.

New in Printix Client 1.2.152.0 (Oct 23, 2017)

  • Improvements:
  • Printix Client: If you change the name of a print queue in Printix Administrator, the name of the corresponding print queue on computers will also change within 10 minutes.
  • Printix Client: Releasing print anywhere documents from another company network, now also works if the printer does not support PDF printing. The print queue must have Enable printing via the cloud checked. If needed, the print queue is added automatically on the computer, where the document is stored. Adding the print queue on the computer may take 1-5 minutes depending on the print driver. During this time the Printix App will show the state Working on it, before transitioning to Printing and then Printed. The print queue is kept after printing, so it does not have to be added again when subsequent print anywhere documents are released to this printer.
  • Printix Client for Windows: Faster response to applications asking about the capabilities of Printix managed printers. Issue seen with Microsoft Dynamics NAV (Navision).
  • Printix Administrator: Faster loading of users and computers. Click Load more at the bottom of the Users page to see more users. Click Load more at the bottom of the Computers page to see more computers.
  • Printix Administrator: On the Printers page you can click the new Created column heading to sort printers by the date they were registered. That, way you can quickly establish which printers were most recently added or discovered. No date is shown if the printer was registered before 2017-10-17.
  • Printix Administrator: On the Print drivers page, you can now see the print driver the system would automatically select, as it is listed at the top and tagged DEFAULT.
  • Printix Administrator: The Network properties page shows the computer's name and now also the system. Example: COMPIX (Windows 10 x64).
  • Printix Redirector: Printing to a Follow/Pull print queue (virtual printer) would recognize users who Sign in with Microsoft (Azure AD) and users who sign in with their network username and password (Active Directory). Now it also recognizes users who Sign in with Google (G Suite account) and users who Sign in with email (Printix account).
  • Fixes:
  • Printix Client for Windows: Increased resilience of the Printix Service. If the Printix Client find the Printix Service has stopped, then it will restart it automatically.
  • Printix Client for Mac: Computers (laptops) that frequently changed network had a risk of temporarily not being able to release documents. Issue would be resolved with the restart of the computer.
  • Printix Client for Mac: The Printix Apple Certificate is now used to sign, not only the .pkg file, but also the MacService.app. This saves users from being asked to click Allow to the firewall dialog question: Do you want the application "MacService.app" to accept incoming network connections?
  • Printix Client: Adding printers with DNS hostname could fail if the DNS system returned a list of resolved IP addresses with an IPv6 address as the first in the list.
  • Printix Administrator: The name of the Report csv file you can download from the Printer properties page, now includes the extension .csv.
  • Known issues:
  • Printers registered before 2017-10-17 are listed without a Created date on the Printers page in Printix Administrator.
  • Printix Client for Windows: On Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) at sign in, it may complain about missing System.web.dll and errors in production.js. This happens if Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 is installed. To resolve, upgrade to Microsoft .NET Framework 4.
  • Printix Client for Windows: If you open the Control Panel, Features and Programs and click Printix Client the Product version is that of the initially installed Printix Client. The current version number can be seen on the Printix Client Diagnostics dialog.
  • Printix Client for Mac: Documents printed to a Printix Anywhere printer is always tracked as 1 page.
  • Translations: These are made with the use of Google Translate. Please inform us about improvements for translations.

  • New features:
  • MDM for Windows 10: Support for deployment of Printix Client with Microsoft Intune and Windows Installer through MDM. This modern method uses the Mobile Device Management (MDM) capabilities built into Windows 10. If you have not completely moved to Windows 10 you can use Microsoft Intune and Windows Installer, as this supports both Windows 10, 8.1, 8 and 7.
  • Single Sign-on (SSO): In organizations that use Azure Active Directory Domain Join, users who sign in to their Windows 10 computer with their Microsoft work or school account are automatically signed into the Printix Client. Works with Windows 10 editions: Pro, Enterprise and Education. Microsoft does not support Azure AD Join on the Windows 10 Home edition.
  • Sign in with Google. If your organization is using the Gmail service with your email domain you can Enable Google authentication and have users automatically register the first time they sign in with their Google work or school account (not @gmail.com).

  • Attempts to release documents would sometimes fail with Release not possible, even though the computer with the document was powered on and network connected.
  • Printix Client for Windows: Printers connected with a WSD port on Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) are now converted to Printix.
  • On Windows the Printix Service did not start in some rare cases.
  • The status of Printix printers in the Print dialog of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint would after printing be reported as: "Ready: 1 document waiting". Now the status is reported as: "Ready".
  • If you added or modified a print driver configuration and this involved opening the Advanced tab and clicking the Printing Defaults… button to configure per-printer defaults, then when clicking OK or Apply you would see the message: “Printer settings could not be saved. The parameter is incorrect.” Now changes to Printing Defaults, can be saved.

New in Printix Client 1.1.758 (Apr 12, 2017)

Now the Network property is updated when the Computer properties page is saved.

  • During the 30-day trial period Printix Administrator displays the header: Your trial ends in x days. Email reminders are sent when 15, 5 and 1 day remains. These emails are by default sent to the email address of the user who signed up for Printix. These emails and invoices can be sent to another email address. Open the Subscription page, enter a New email, click Save, and click Confirm in the received email: "Printix – Please confirm your email address".
  • It is now configurable if the three-letter printer ID (ASD, BNM, ...) should appear after or before the printer name. For new tenants the default is: Printer ID after printer name. This is controlled on the Settings page in Printix Administrator. Existing printers are automatically updated within 10 minutes to reflect the new position of the printer ID.
  • Now 18 languages are supported. Added languages: Finnish, Polish and Japanese.
  • Fixes:
  • If the search criteria on the History page does not give any result, you will now see the text: No items match your search.

New in Printix Client 1.1.603 (Oct 31, 2016)

  • New features:
  • Support for macOS 10.12 Sierra.
  • Dashboard in Printix Administrator redesigned to introduce you to printing with Printix and guide you through the next steps so you can successfully deploy Printix in your company.
  • Improvements:
  • Azure/Office 365 authentication can now be setup by simply connecting to Azure AD once. Users are automatically registered the first time they sign in to Printix with their Microsoft work or school account. Existing customers that use the FederationMetadata.xml file setup can continue to use this for now, but please contact us to hear how to transition to the new improved setup.
  • Printix Administrator: The Printers page includes link to Unregistered printers (if there are any) and a Discover printers button. You will see the status Discovering printers while the discovery is in progress.
  • Printix Administrator: When you change print driver on the Drivers tab you can now see the printer's supported output formats (page description languages), for example: PCL, PostScript, ... You can use this information as you decide what print driver to use. If the driver is not compatible with the printer, then either nothing comes out when you print, or you will typically get pages with lots of weird looking characters.
  • Added support for Kodak printers.
  • Fixes:
  • Printer features (color printing, 2-sided printing) are now also detected when a printer is added manually and not just when it is added as a result of a printer discovery.
  • Printix Client for Windows: Automatic deployment of Printix Client with Microsoft Intune would sometimes report the installation as failed even though Printix Client was installed and functioning. When this happened the Windows log would display Error 1603, and Intune would try to install Printix Client again and again.
  • Printix Client: Upon installation and sign in there was a delay of up to 5 minutes before the software checked if there were print queues to be converted. Now the initial conversion of print queues happens without delay.

New in Printix Client 1.1.583 (Oct 24, 2016)

  • New features:

  • Azure/Office 365 authentication now support use of on-premise AD via ADFS (Active Directory Federation Services).
  • Button text Continue with Windows changed to Sign in with Microsoft.
  • Service Level Agreement.
  • Improvements:
  • Improved sign up flow with fewer steps. Status reporting during printer discovery. If no printer is found, we will prompt for the address of a printer before completing the setup.
  • The email reminder: "Printix - Setup is not complete..." is sent if the first Printix Client has not been installed 24 hours after the Printix account was activated.
  • Changed defaults for new tenants. Enable Print later and Convert print queues are now checked by default on the Settings page in Printix Administrator.
  • All added and discovered printers are made active by default, so all users can use the printers.
  • The Invite Technician function can be used if you first want an administrator (you) to add and test printing before deciding to make the printer active, so all users can use the printer.

  • Printix Client for Windows: Printers added via Web Services (WSD) were not always converted.
  • Printix Client for Mac: Printers added via Bonjour were not always converted.
  • Printix Administrator: Events on the History page now shown with date separator (YYYY-MM-DD).
  • Printix Administrator: Adding a credit card on the Subscription page was not always possible, also the Confirm link now works in the email: Printix - Please confirm your email address.
  • Printix Client: Uninstalling and installing Printix Client no longer creates multiple instances of the computer.
  • Sign in with Microsoft (Azure/Office 365 authentication) would result in the Microsoft error message: AADSTS75011: Authentication method 'WindowsIntegrated' by which the user authenticated with the service doesn't match requested authentication method 'Password, ProtectedTransport'. This would happen in installations that used on-premise AD via ADFS (Active Directory Federation Services).
