Memories Changelog

What's new in Memories 1.9.2

Jul 26, 2016
  • FIXED:
  • App crashed for some users after several app launches under very specific circumstances. This is fixed now.
  • Previously introduced Auto-save was unreliable when only metadata was changed (date, location etc.). Auto-save will always save on exit now (and use the new improved behavior for changes during application usage). The menu item now also saves no matter what.

New in Memories 1.9 (Mar 11, 2016)

  • This release not only fixes some of the long overdue bugs, it also introduces a completely rewritten iCloud synchronization & video recording and OS X 10.11 El Capitan compatibility. And the best of all? It is a completely free update for you! (In fact we never charged for updates since the first release in January 2011).
  • NEW:
  • Completely rewritten iCloud synchronization code. On the first launch you can chose if you want to use iCloud to keep your journal up to date on all of your devices.
  • Made iCloud synchronization faster & more stable.
  • Added new system preferences pane that lets you either move your data from or to iCloud. It is no longer necessary to chose upfront if you want encrypted, seamless sync of your journal in the background.
  • Added de-duplication of your entries when turning iCloud on / off.
  • Recording videos was completely rewritten from scratch. All crashes (especially after finishing the recording session) should be gone now. It also got faster to record multiple videos in succession.
  • Added new About window.
  • OS X 10.9 Mavericks is a requirement now.
  • IMPROVED:
  • Improved application security so that strangers will have an even harder time to reverse-engineer the cryptography algorithms and read your entries.
  • HTTPS calls are used now everywhere it is currently possible.
  • Application speed got an overall improvement (due to algorithm optimization or introduction of background operations).
  • Auto-save in the background now makes sure that there are changes to your journal before it saves. The auto-save functionality is programmed very defensively, but this sometimes led to 5–6 background save calls when no data was changed at all.
  • Improved journal save handling so that operations on the database are more stable.
  • Modernized application to be more stable under newer versions of OS X.
  • User interface improvements, especially under OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
  • It got easier to get in touch with us right from within the app.
  • FIXED:
  • Fixed an infinite loop on iCloud import with separate databases from multiple devices that weren’t previously associated with iCloud.
  • The app was sometimes crashing when the map view was open.
  • The sidebar wasn’t showing up under certain circumstances on newer versions of OS X. It correctly hides / unhides now.
  • You are required to enter your email address now if you want to get in touch with us (support, feedback, bug reports). That’s the only way we can answer & help you.
  • Fixed some smaller typos in the user interface.

New in Memories 1.8 (Nov 10, 2012)

  • NEW:
  • Sync your journal over iCloud.
  • Gorgeous new interface.
  • Weather & location for new entries. Old entries will automatically update when you select them. There is also a new menu item in case you want to manually update both.
  • Take a photo or video with your iSight camera without leaving the app.
  • Notification Center support for writing reminders.
  • Added auto-lock feature. By default Memories locks itself in 5 minutes after the window was closed.
  • Enhanced for Retina displays.
  • Preferences for a default font, auto-lock timer, Notification Center and weather.
  • Memories now requires OS X 10.7 Lion.
  • IMPROVED:
  • List view looks much nicer now and adds more information (date, title & mood).
  • Change the date of an entry right from the top bar of each entry (or alternatively double-click in the list view or use the Edit menu).
  • Memories is much faster now, because it doesn’t load all entries on launch. Instead it loads and decrypts just the selected one.
  • Better memory management, support for new technologies.
  • Moved date filter calendar out of the way into a popover.
  • Added animations at several places for more pizzaz.
  • Improved support of embedded sound & videos. The play buttons work now every time you click on them and you don’t have to right-click anymore.
  • Every encryption key is now truly random.
  • Greatly improved encryption code and security.
  • Completely new login view with a hint in case you can’t remember the password anymore.
  • Improved auto-saving on every major operation.
  • Memories now informs you when no entry is selected instead of being completely blank.
  • Error handling in several cases.
  • App icon.
  • FIXED:
  • Text no longer disappears when you change the mood without previously saving an entry.
  • The insertion cursor should no longer jump every couple of minutes when you write more than a screen full of text.
  • Search in the content of all entries.
  • Fixed bug where password wasn’t recognized on certain older machines.
  • Window should no longer be grey in some rare cases where the app was force quit and the window size preferences got corrupted.
  • Entries from which you removed all content get properly saved now instead of reverting to the last non-empty version.
  • Empty space between entries on print & export of the whole journal.

New in Memories 1.5.1 (Dec 20, 2011)

  • Memories not longer crashes on launch and reports that the window width is less than assumed.

New in Memories 1.5 (Dec 16, 2011)

  • NEW:
  • Added menu item for changing the date of the current entry. You can still double-click on an entry in the sidebar.
  • Added menu items for adding images, sounds and videos directly in the app. Just place the vertical cursor in the entry where you want to add an attachment and go to the Edit→Add Attachment menu.
  • Added shortcuts for resetting preferences and optionally your entries. When you press ⇧ on launch Memories will reset only the preferences (like window position and size). When you press ⌥⇧ on launch Memories will back up your entries and reset the whole app.
  • IMPROVED:
  • Checkboxes for substitutions (Smart Copy/Paste, Smart Quotes, Smart Dashes, Smart Links, Text Replacement) are now remembered between application launches.
  • Removed the misleading image import entries in the context menu.
  • Added window for feedback, feature requests and bug reports. Use the Help→Send Feedback menu to easily get in touch with us. The window will also appear on the next launch, if the app crashed on your Mac. This way we can solve your issues even quicker.
  • FIXED:
  • Memories not longer crashes on launch and reports that there is a wrong subview count.
  • Text view doesn’t scroll to top on auto-save anymore and the cursor position doesn’t get messed up.
  • Note: This is the last Mac OS X Snow Leopard compatible update. Back up the app and data if you don’t plan to upgrade your operating system. The developers highly advise to upgrade to OS X Lion. Memories benefits from a lot new features like full-screen, better user interface or sandboxing.

New in Memories 1.4.1 (Oct 5, 2011)

  • NEW:
  • Finally there is a possibility to change the date of an entry. With just a double-click on an entry you can easily change the date.
  • Native full-screen support in OS X Lion.
  • Integrated support links into the app. If you have questions or suggestions you can get even easier in touch with us.
  • With focus-mode you can hide the sidebar and focus on your writing. This works even in full-screen mode.
  • You can export the whole journal. We also added more supported file types: Portable Document Format (.pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), Rich Text Format With Attachments (.rtfd), Web Page (.html), Web Archive, OpenDocument Text (.odt), Word 2007 format (.docx), Word 2003 format (.xml), Word 97 format (.doc) and plain text (.txt). That’s crazy! We know it.
  • Now you can print a single entry or the whole journal.
  • Thanks to the import feature you can select a file or whole folder and Memories recursively adds all supported files as new entries to your journal. The date of the entry is set to the last modification date of the file.
  • Added support for OS X Lion features, like restoration of the user interface and sudden termination so that Memories can quit safer and faster.
  • New icon.
  • Added Esc shortcut for leaving the full-screen mode in Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
  • IMPROVED:
  • Pictures will be automatically scaled down to the window size when they are too big and don’t fit.
  • The Memories design looks better in OS X Lion now. We redesigned all toolbar icons and added a popover to change the date of an entry. The dialog to modify the password is a nice sheet now. We changed the black header of every entry to white and added subtle icons.
  • The last used spelling and grammar settings are saved and restored between restarts.
  • The auto-save code now also saves on major operations like export, import, print or when adding, deleting or selecting an entry. You’ll never have to worry about your journal again.
  • Depending on the format you choose, pictures and other content gets exported, too. Previously only the text of an entry was exported.
  • This version includes a new database layout that makes your diary much more reliable against data loss and corruption. The nice side-effect of this change is an improved overall speed.
  • FIXED:
  • Due to an User Interface bug there seemed to be no entries after a restart until you resized the sidebar. This bug was mainly triggered when you quit the application while in full-screen mode in Mac OS X Snow Leopard. This is fixed now.
