New in Debit & Credit 6.0 (Dec 16, 2022)

  • I am incredibly pleased to start a new long-term project of modernising underlying technologies used by Debit & Credit. The app has started in 2014 and many things have changed since then. Over the coming months or maybe even years I intend to modernise the code used by the app. This will allow the app to maintain its high level of performance and stability, as well as get new features faster in the future.
  • In this version the following parts were rewritten:
  • Report graphs
  • Report tables
  • Exporting reports to PDF
  • Using Handoff for reports
  • The changes were made only for the users running iOS 16 and macOS Ventura. If you are on an older version, you will see the same old reports.
  • Actual report data (information generated by the app) will be rewritten in the next version.
  • You should not see any major changes to the reports, I was aiming to keep them the same while rewriting. However, should you see any issues with report graphs or tables, please contact me through the app settings.

New in Debit & Credit 5.6 (Oct 23, 2022)

  • macOS Ventura support
  • Fixed bug when exported transactions from a report (either to a CSV file or the Numbers app) had incorrect amounts for categories when the "Group subcategories" option was enabled in the report settings
  • Fixed bug when sometimes after deleting an account transfers could be duplicated. The fix works only when all devices (both iOS and macOS) are running version 5.6 or newer

New in Debit & Credit 5.5.3 (Feb 18, 2022)

  • When upcoming transactions are enabled they are no longer displayed until you scroll the list of transactions of transactions up.
  • When you have many attachments it can a bit hard to manage all of them in one place. So now on the “Attachments” page in the app settings attachments are grouped by year.

New in Debit & Credit 5.5.2 (Jan 20, 2022)

  • Fixed bug when transfers from/to accounts that are marked as excluded from net wealth calculation were leading to incorrect financial plans calculations
  • Improved matching of existing payees when importing a file with transactions

New in Debit & Credit 5.5 (Dec 2, 2021)

  • Now you can preview upcoming scheduled transactions in your accounts right next to regular transactions. To do that, click on the "View" menu in the menu bar and select the relevant menu item.

New in Debit & Credit 5.4 (Oct 20, 2021)

  • Improved Statement Reconciliation:
  • When reconciling transactions with a bank statement, you can drag and drop transactions to rearrange them by date. That way you can make transactions order match your bank statement.
  • Also, if you share an account with someone else you will see a new filter option to show transactions only created by them. This is useful if your credit card has supplementary cardholders and their transactions are listed separately on a statement.
  • Improved Financial Plans:
  • When looking at financial period results, you can quickly see how much expense and income was planned for that period compared to the actual amounts.
  • New Icons for Accounts and Folders (macOS 12 Required):
  • Added 10 new icons that you can use for accounts and account folders. Please note that they will not sync to devices running iOS 14 or macOS 11.
  • Shortcuts App Support (macOS 12 Required):
  • Now you can create transactions using the new Shortcuts app in macOS Monterey.

  • Reorganized Menu Bar Menus:
  • Menu bar commands for importing files were moved into the “File” menu in the menu bar, the new “Transaction” menu bar displays common actions on transactions when there is one selected.

  • Small improvements related to CSV file import

New in Debit & Credit 5.3.3 (Mar 2, 2021)

  • This update includes several small features and improvements:
  • Improvements to Reports:
  • Previously the app was excluding categories from the “What do I spend my money on?” report when they had transactions but the final amount was either positive or zero (for instance, if you had an expense that was later refunded). Now such categories are included in the “What do I spend my money on?” report. Also in the iOS version of the app, the “How well do I manage my budgets” report was slightly redesigned to fit more information.
  • Improvements To Search Operators:
  • Now you can type “category:none” into the search field to quickly find transactions without a category. Similarly, you can use the same operator for descriptions, payees, tags, and notes.
  • Option To Convert Transaction Descriptions Into Notes:
  • Transaction descriptions are supposed to be reused with multiple transactions. If you have many descriptions that were used only once, you might be better using transaction notes instead. That will improve the performance of the app in some cases.
  • In this update, those customers who have many one-time used descriptions will see an option to convert them into transaction notes. That option will be provided in the advanced app settings, in the "Descriptions" section.

New in Debit & Credit 5.3 (Jan 15, 2021)

  • Calendar Integration for Scheduled Transactions:
  • Now you have an option to include scheduled transactions into your system calendar. That is useful if you want to see future payments alongside all other calendar events. To use this feature, enable the “Include Into Calendar” option. The option is available when creating or editing a scheduled transaction.
  • New Cryptocurrencies:
  • In addition to Bitcoin, the following cryptocurrencies were added: Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin, Stellar, Monero. You can also select gold (XAU) or silver (XAG) as a currency now. Before using one of those new currencies, please make sure to update the app to this version on all of your devices.

New in Debit & Credit 5.2.1 (Jan 5, 2021)

  • Displayed remaining budget periods are now more accurate, e.g. "Ends in: 1 week and 5 days" instead of just "1 week"
  • The toolbar is now displayed when the app is used in the full-screen mode in macOS Big Sur
  • Fixed bug when pressing Esc key sometimes was not closing the new transaction form
  • Fixed bug when a financial plan created for just one month was incorrectly calculated
  • Fixed bug when printed reports could be clipped on the right side

New in Debit & Credit 5.2 (Dec 11, 2020)

  • Importing transactions is now much easier for new users: you no longer need to create accounts before importing a file with transactions. Now the app will recognize accounts in a file and will suggest creating them before completing an import.

New in Debit & Credit 5.1.6 (Dec 11, 2020)

  • Fixed bug when item selection in the sidebar was dropping after showing hidden accounts
  • Fixed bug when sometimes scheduled transactions had an incorrect next date (only if a weekday repeating period was used)
  • Fixed bug when table columns for a financial plan were incorrectly sized after updating a plan

New in Debit & Credit 5.1.4 (Nov 27, 2020)

  • Our widgets in macOS Big Sur now have a larger font size.

New in Debit & Credit 5.1 (Nov 10, 2020)

  • New design for macOS Big Sur:
  • The first time you launch Debit & Credit in macOS 11, you will notice a new toolbar at the top of the app window. It has the same familiar controls as before but looks so much better in Big Sur. The sidebar was also redesigned with new icons. Another great feature is full support for custom accent colors. If you select a custom accent color in the system preferences of your Mac, you will notice that the same color will be used in the app for selections and some of the user interface elements.
  • New Widgets:
  • Debit & Credit has three new widgets for macOS Big Sur: budgets, accounts, and scheduled transactions. The widgets are configurable and you can set your custom background color to make them match your wallpaper. You can also set a specific budget or an account for the relevant widget if you want to.
  • Financial Plan Analysis:
  • Once a financial plan ends, you will get a short analysis from the app that will contain insights into your performance. Also in the Mac app, you can now see an annual total for every plan item when using the table view mode.
  • Improved Support for Apple Card:
  • When adding a new transaction for Apple Card, you will see the new cashback selection available right in the new transaction form. Scheduled transactions now also can have Apple Card cashback recorded automatically. As a reminder, if you have both “Apple Card” and “Apple Cash” accounts in the app you will be able to have daily cash transactions created automatically after creating an expense on Apple Card account.
  • Improvements to reports:
  • The following two reports now have an option to display quarterly data: “How my spending is changing?” and “How much do I earn compared to my expenses?”.

  • Now you can set your scheduled transactions to repeat on a particular day of the month. For instance, you can set a scheduled transaction to repeat on the second Wednesday of the month.
  • Merging Metadata Items:
  • Sometimes you might need to merge a few descriptions or categories. Now you can do that in the app preferences. Select multiple items, right-click one of them, and select "Merge".
  • Shared Financial Plans:
  • Your family members can now optionally see your financial plans. To share a financial plan, you need to be also sharing all of your accounts. As a reminder, sharing settings are available in the app settings, in the iCloud sync section.
  • Search for Scheduled Transactions:
  • When you switch to the "Scheduled" section in the Mac app, you will see a search box. You can use it to search for pretty much everything but it also supports search operators (e.g. "after", "before", "category", etc). You can read more about search operators in the user guide.

  • Account Folder Sharing:
  • Now you can share account folders with other users. Any new accounts you later create in shared folders will be automatically shared as well. However, please note that it is no longer possible to share individual accounts in a folder, you can only share all accounts in a folder or individual accounts that are not in folders. If you have previously shared accounts in a folder, you will need to set up shared accounts again.
  • Improved Account Selection for Sharing:
  • Since now the app supports many different types of data that can be shared (accounts, folders, budgets, scheduled transactions) the dialog for picking what data to share was redesigned to offer a better experience.
  • Effective Date for Refunds:
  • When creating a refund for an existing transaction, the app will allow you to set an “effective date” for it. This is the date that will be used for reports and plan calculations. Consider the following example: you buy something in January and then later sell it in March. When creating a refund transaction for the sale, you want that transaction to be accounted for as if it was recorded in January (you want reports to indicate decreased expense in January and not in March).
  • Improved Financial Plans:
  • Previously the app was showing unplanned expenses only as categories. Now unplanned expenses with tags will be separately grouped.
  • Now you can duplicate existing financial plans. This is useful when you have finished a plan and you want to create a new plan based on it.
  • Financial plan calculation is now up to 2 times faster.
  • Improved Reports:
  • When you open the “What do I spend my money on? report and then select a category, the list of transactions will have amounts for the relevant split categories separately displayed, e.g. “$5 out of $20”. Previously this feature was available only when the report did not have the categories grouping option enabled.
  • Improved Transactions Exporting:
  • If you use the same child category name more than once in different parent categories, the app will include a parent category name when exporting transactions.
  • Background Refresh:
  • If you leave the Mac app open it will refresh data in the background every hour to keep up to date with other devices and perform other maintenance tasks.
  • Other Improvements:
  • Handoff support for financial plans
  • Now you can set zero as an amount for expense or income transactions
  • Small improvements related to how scheduled transactions are displayed
  • On Mac budgets will have different progress bar colour depending on your spending (not in the sidebar, only when “Budgets” section is selected)
  • On Mac badges for overspent budgets and overdue scheduled transactions have a prettier font

  • Financial Plans:
  • A completely new section of the app that allows you to create a financial plan for the next 12 months and then compare your financial performance against it. A great tool to see your future net wealth and make decisions about your financial future. To use financial plans you need to need a Mac with macOS 10.15.
  • Tax Related Improvements to Reports:
  • Now you can export report data with transactions into a single CSV file or to Numbers app. This is great if you need to prepare a categories report with transactions for your tax accountant. • Share Extension:
  • Now you can share a PDF or an image from any other app to quickly create a new transaction with that file in Debit & Credit. Just right click a file in any other app and select "Share" in the menu (you might need to activate "Debit & Credit" there). This is very useful if you often create new transactions with invoices or receipts that you get via email. Moreover, the app will analyze the file you share with it and it will try to suggest the relevant payee, category and account when possible. With time as the app learns it might be able to extract amounts from invoices as well making adding a new transaction a one click experience.
  • Unlock With Apple Watch:
  • If you use PIN code protection in the app, you will be able to unlock the app with your Apple Watch (watchOS 6 and macOS Catalina required).
  • Interactive Reports:
  • Now you can click and drag on a report graph to see its details, just like in the iOS version of the app.

For example some people might find useful having payee displayed regardless of any other information available for a transaction. • Detailed information on this feature is available in the user guide.

New in Debit & Credit 2.6.2 (Jan 22, 2018)

  • This update fixes small bugs including a problem when it was not possible to use tab to switch between different fields (in the "New Transaction" form). Version 2.6 had a number of new great features:
  • Option to have two reports displayed side by side (Mac and iPad only):
  • This is very useful when you want to compare expenses between two different time periods. When adding a second report, the app will automatically suggest the most relevant date period for it. For example, if you are looking at your expenses for this year, the second report will open for the previous year.
  • Support for mixed split categories:
  • In very rare cases you might want to create a transaction that will include both expense and income split categories. For example, you received a salary with particular deductions that you want to account for. In that scenario you can apply expense split categories to an income transaction. To use this feature, hold option while clicking on "+" when creating a split category.
  • Visual improvements to "How my spending is changing?" report:
  • Now this report is much easier to read when you compare multiple categories. Definitely worth looking at the new design!
  • Exporting transactions from reports:
  • When using “What do I spend my money on?” report, you can export transactions from a particular expense category to a CSV file. To do that, just right click a category in a report and select the relevant menu item. The same feature applies to “Where do I spend my money?” and “What are my sources of income?” reports.

  • Premium version is now a subscription:
  • Nobody likes subscriptions but unfortunately this is the only way to make app development sustainable these days. There are too many financial apps that were abandoned by their developers because keeping them updated was no longer feasible. Existing customers who purchased premium version for Mac will continue enjoying premium benefits on their Mac devices (similarly, if you purchased premium for iOS, you will continue having premium there).
