M3U is a multimedia playlist file format that contains a collection of paths to audio and/or video files.

The M3U format has been originally created and used by Winamp (on the Windows platform), but due to its benefits, it is now supported by almost all other multimedia applications.

M3U playlists resemble basic text files which include the relative or absolute locations for multiple multimedia tracks that will be played after the user loads the playlist using a media player.

Usually, when playing several files, the active audio or video player will allow its users to save the list as an M3U file, so that the same selection of multimedia files may be played at a later time.

Furthermore, M3U playlist files can be usually opened by a wide range of apps, therefore users will not be restricted to open their playlists only with the app used to create them.
