JPX is an image format that uses the wavelet compression algorithm and developed as an alternative to the discrete cosine transform-based JPEG method used to encode standard JPEG files.

JPX images can be encoded using lossless or lossy compression and they are based on JPEG 2000 Core Coding, a graphic compression standard and a specialized coding system.

If users want to make their own JPX files, they will have to encode their images to the JPX format using graphic converters that come with built-in support for this specific image format.
