FITS (abbreviation for Flexible Image Transport System) is an image format that is widely used for saving and storing the grabbed frames from telescope observations.
FITS was specially developed to store astrononmical image data in a standard format, and it usually contains both binary data and ASCII text.
Users are typically more interested in the image contents of their files, so they will typically opt for converting FITS files to other image formats, rather than ASCII-compatible ones.
Because FITS is not a highly popular format, users will prefer to convert their image files to more common formats.
