Open-source Markdown editor that emulates the look and functionality of TextEdit, with a minimalistic design, lightweight build, and even some improvements over Apple's text editor #Markdown Editor #Text Editor #TextEdit Alternative #Markdown #Text #Editor
TextEdit isn’t perfect, but it’s familiar. Every Mac user has some experience with it, so any app that has similarities to it will be easily accessible. It then stands to reason that a Markdown editor that looks and feels like TextEdit would be a great idea.
MarkEdit is exactly that, and it’s certainly a great idea. It’s a very lightweight app that takes a few design cues from Apple’s text editor but is dedicated to Markdown. It’s small, fast, and intuitive, and it adds features that we would all like to see in TextEdit as well.
This app is ideal for Markdown users who need something more than TextEdit but don’t want a non-native app bloated with unnecessary features. MarkEdit is Swift-based and comes in a very small package, and it’s designed to open and process even large files very quickly.
As far as features go, there’s no live preview, but you get syntax highlighting, a spelling checker, support for multiple tabs, and a few toolbar options for inserting common syntax elements. The UI can be customized as well, along with some of the app’s features.
MarkEdit feels great to use. It’s just as simple as TextEdit, and it even improves upon it in several ways. Aside from the obvious Markdown-related features, you can use multiple tabs, and you can configure the app to open a new document automatically at launch, something that TextEdit still doesn’t let you do.
Compared to many other Markdown apps, this editor feels much more clutter-free and snappy. You don’t have tons of toolbars and buttons to distract you, no live preview, and no online component. Everything is stored locally, and nowhere else.
You don’t need to be a Markdown expert to use MarkEdit. Despite its minimalistic design, it allows you to insert all the most common syntax elements from menus or via keyboard shortcuts, and the syntax highlighting makes it very easy to learn the language.
This app is great for anyone who prefers lightweight text editors but would like some Markdown-specific features to go with them.
