Open source and menu bar-based app that makes it simple to update your Mac's desktop background using famous works of art or the hottest images from a custom subreddit. #Change wallpaper #Switch wallpaper #Art wallpaper #Wallpaper #Art #Background
Having the same desktop background might seem appealing to some of us, but there are others who would consider keeping the same wallpaper for more than 15 minutes a blasphemy.
Muzei is a low-key and straightforward to use little app designed specifically for the latter, a tool to update your wallpaper with a click of a button.
Moreover, Muzei has been created to help you use famous works of art as your Mac's desktop background. Muzei also comes with support for using custom subreddits as a wallpaper source for users who want more choices.
Muzei lives in your Mac's menu bar, and its main window gives you detailed information about the current wallpaper, as well as a direct link to its source page and a button to rapidly access the Preferences window.
You can quickly change the current background by clicking on "Update," change the wallpaper source channel and save the current wallpaper via Muzei's status bar menu.
Muzei also makes it simple to apply a blur or a dim effect to the images it sets as your Mac's desktop background. The effects' intensity is easily customizable using sliders, and you are also presented with a quick way to set the app to launch on login in the same window.
Unfortunately, even though Muzei supports custom subreddits as wallpaper sources, during testing it frequently crashed when using the subreddit wallpaper channel, culminating with a crash loop that can only be fixed by uninstalling the app using AppCleaner (https://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/AppCleaner.shtml).
Muzei also comes with multiple subreddits support by adding a “+" between them, but you will have to either write them by hand or using the Paste feature in the contextual menu because the input field for custom subreddits does not support pasting using the ⌘+V shortcut.
However, when testing Muzei using the default EarthPorn subreddit, the app no longer crashed, but it only cycled between the first give hottest posts in the subreddit, as it was the case when using custom a subreddit.
Also, besides crash fixes, Muzei needs at least a couple of features to make it more usable: global hotkey support and multiple monitor support.
In a nutshell, if you don't need to change your wallpaper more than once per day and subreddit support isn't a must, Muzei could fill your needs. Regrettably, anything more than that will send Muzei spinning down a crash loop and make it unusable until you completely clear out its preferences.
