Darker For Mac

The Dark mode introduced in macOS Mojave has received quite a bit of appreciation, but a couple of potentially useful functions are still missing, such as a way to switch between the Light and Dark modes quickly, and the option to create a schedule based on the time of day.

Darker is a relatively simple app that adds both of these features. It allows you to switch between modes with a single mouse click, as well as have the application initiate the change automatically based on local sunrise and sunset times. Of course, you can also set these times manually.

There are two ways to toggle between the two modes. The first involves clicking the application’s icon in the menu bar, and clicking the “Toggle between modes” button. Not the simplest way of getting the job done, but there is a quicker alternative.

You can have Darker add a new icon to the menu bar, which you only have to click once in order to switch between Dark and Light mode. This method is much more elegant, but it would have been great if there was a way to combine the two icons into one and maintain the same functionality, perhaps by right-clicking the icon to bring up the configuration window.

If all you want is for your Mac to enable Dark mode at night, but not during the day, this app has you covered. You can set the times when the switch should be performed automatically and have one less thing to worry about.

Alternatively, the app can just fetch the local sunrise and sunset times, and then use those to determine when the switch should be made. You can still fine tune these values later.

To sum up, Darker is a great app for users who need an easier way to toggle the macOS Dark mode on and off. It is easy to set up and use, and very unobtrusive, although it would have helped if the two menu bar icons were merged into one.
