RetroClip For Mac

Screen recording applications are plentiful, but it’s common, especially when playing games, for something really cool to happen just when you aren't recording. An instant replay feature ensures you are always prepared, and that is what RetroClip provides.

The app works like this: while running, it continuously records up to two minutes of video, replacing older frames to make way for newer ones. Nothing is saved to your disk until you decide to do so, as the data is stored in a fixed region of memory.

In essence, it’s almost the same as the Instant Replay feature in Nvidia’s ShadowPlay (or whatever it’s being called these days), with the advantage of not requiring an Nvidia video card.

When something interesting has happened on your desktop, all you have to do is press a hotkey (⇧⌘2 by default). The last 30 seconds, 1 minute or 2 minutes will be saved to the Movies folder, and the app will continue recording.

You can also configure RetroClip to record audio from any input device, such as a microphone. However, it doesn’t seem to be possible to also capture desktop audio, which makes it less useful for gaming.

While not being able to capture in-game audio is a drawback, the fact that the app can save keyboard input as a subtitle track makes it very useful for tutorials or demonstrations, provided they aren’t too long.

If you just don’t want to miss anything important that might happen on your desktop, RetroClip is a nice app to have around. It does have a few drawbacks, such as the fact that recordings are limited to 2 minutes and its inability to record desktop audio, but it works great and is remarkably intuitive.
