While working long hours on your computer or just playing around, it is imperative to make sure that you rest your eyes from time to time.

To do this, you can follow the 20-20-20 rule which says that every 20 minutes you should take at least a 20 seconds break looking and focusing on an object at least 20 feet away from the screen.

Following this course of action, you can significantly reduce asthenopia (the medical term for eye strain) and prevent the headaches which would appear causing you to experience productivity issues until they go away.

blinker is small and unobtrusive Electron-based application created to remind you to do just that using visual notifications to let you know when the time has arrived to take a short break, a good choice considering that some users don't use headphones or mute their Mac's audio while working.

Once launched, the app will add a status bar item which allows you to set it to start on login and to also receive audio notifications at the same time with the automated visual alerts.

Blinker's menu bar item also allows you to stop the timer at any time to stop the alerts while you are away from your Mac.

As a downside, besides the menulet, blinker also adds a dock icon which should be removed in the next releases seeing that it does not add anything to its functionality.

blinker has no other user interface elements, but as we saw during the test period, it doesn't need anything else to do its job perfectly as it is.

Taking all of the above in consideration, having blinker installed on your Mac is an excellent idea if you are using your Mac a lot during the day and you regularly forget to take small breaks for preventing eye fatigue.
