There are countless apps that add more functionality to the menu bar, but you can’t always find exactly what you need. In these cases, one alternative is to get an app that lets you run scripts from the menu bar, giving you many more options, provided you are a little bit code-savvy.

As you’re probably expecting, Commander is one of these apps, designed to let you run Shell and Python scrips from the menu bar. They are all listed in a simple menu, and they can be assigned individual icons and placed into categories.

When launching the app for the first time, you will notice that a few simple scripts are already included. These allow you to hide or show desktop icons and open a website, giving you a good idea of how the application works.

You didn’t get Commander just for those sample scripts however, so go ahead and open the settings to start adding new ones. The app supports Shell or Python scripts, and you can either paste the code or open the script files directly.

After adding a new script, you will have the option of providing an icon as well. While this step can be skipped, icons do make the menu look much nicer.

Folders can also be created to place items into categories, and you can move stuff around freely if you aren’t happy with any script’s position in the menu.

Commander offers pretty much all the essential features you need for adding and running scripts, though it would have helped if there was a way to refresh the menu after adding a new script. Currently, you have to restart the app for new items to be visible.
