Simple to use macOS utility designed to help you get a quick and elegant overview of how much your Mac has been active or asleep #View downtime #Record breaks #Downtime recorder #Break #Shutdown #Log out
Keeping a record of your Mac's awake time is a good idea if you need to have detailed statistics of how much time you sit in front of your computer throughout each day.
DownTime is a free and easy to use macOS application created to perform exactly this type of task, to keep a close eye on you Mac's awake time and provide you with a detailed list of each such event in the menu bar.
Moreover, the DownTime app automatically records either how long your Mac has been either offline or the amount of time your user has been logged off.
The latter can be separated in two cases: downtimes because of logging out or switch out sessions to other users registered on your Mac. What's important is that DownTime will take notice each time that your user is no longer active, and diligently jot down how long you have been away, in one form or another.
DownTime provides you with a clean and easy on the eyes interface which makes it a cinch to view exactly how much time you have been inactive for any given day. Also, it comes with support for macOS' dark menu bar and dock and, as such, it integrates perfectly within your Mac's current color scheme.
However, DownTime comes with a number of downsides and missing features, the first being that it does not give you an easy way to differentiate between activity lapses due to shut downs or log outs, even though it will color them differently when you enable the "Display colors" within the app's Preferences window.
In our opinion, a simple sign such as an "S" or an "L" next to a shutdown event and a log out one respectively, would go a long way in making the statistics easier to read and more useful overall.
Having the means to export your Mac's downtime stats could be quite useful for quickly generating activity reports based on your daily activity.
Also, DownTime's users would also benefit from a record of how much time the screensaver has been active on their Mac for an even more detailed history of work breaks, as long as the app is used for this purpose.
Taking everything said above into consideration, DownTime is the app you want if you need a low-key and easy to use utility to record and view how long you haven't been using your Mac, either for generating time-based invoices or for keeping track of how much time you spend front of your computer each day.
