It can be difficult to get an accurate assessment of your daily computer use. Regular breaks are healthy, but they make it hard to figure out the total time you have spent in front of your Mac, whether you are trying to see how long you have worked or attempting to limit screen time.

Timeow is an open-source menu bar app that keeps track of active periods and breaks, providing a complete report whenever you need it. It helps you see how your time has been spent and requires almost zero configuration.

Once installed and running, the app will begin tracking activity on your Mac. Whenever any user input is detected, Timeow interprets it as active time. When there is no user input for a certain amount of time (anywhere from one to ten minutes) the app will count it as a break.

At the end of the day, you can check how many active periods have been recorded, with the exact time they began and ended, as well as their length. Breaks are recorded the same way, and they are visible in a separate menu.

While it is probably most useful as a daily time tracker, Timeow can store logs for up to four weeks. You may have a hard time sifting through the data after a while, but the option is there.

If your day involves a lot of short breaks, the data may be a bit difficult to read even after only one day, as the app does not calculate statistics or provide an intuitive graphical representation of your data.

Timeow works great as a simplistic activity tracker, with the added bonus of being free and open-source. However, it would benefit from a more intuitive way to present your data, as well as some statistics that would provide additional insight into your daily Mac usage.
