Unobtrusive solution for avoiding accidental application quits by adding a delay period when using the Command + Q keyboard combination #Prevent accidental quit #Delay app quit #Quit delay screen #Prevent #Accidental #Quit
SlowQuitApps is a small macOS tool that aims to resolve a frequent problem for the users that rely on the Command + Q hotkey to close apps: accidental quits. The utility works in the background and merely delays the action with 1 second.
Worth mentioning is that SlowQuitApps does not make its presence known in any way unless you are actively using the Command + Q hotkey: it will not place an icon in your status bar and it has no graphical user interface for you to interact with.
For your convenience, SlowQuitApps will offer to add itself to the list of login items, which means that, after the initial setup, the utility will work in the background, without requiring any user interaction.
To quit the SlowQuitApps utility, you need to go to the Applications Manager, find the respective process, and use the built-in quit function.
While in standby, SlowQuitApps will not use any CPU power, but the resources consumption is quite low even when actively using the utility (on a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 6GB of RAM, SlowQuitApps used up around 1% of the processing power and less than 10MB of RAM).
When you try to quit an app using the default hotkey, SlowQuitApps will place a delay screen on top of your desktop. This way, you can see how much longer you need to hold down the Command and Q key for the action to be performed.
SlowQuitApps uses a 1 second delay period by default and does not come with any customization options. However, you get to change the delay interval by typing the following command in the Terminal application: “defaults write com.dteoh.SlowQuitApps delay [input value expressed in milliseconds]”
Bottom line, SlowQuitApps brings to the table a very simple yet efficient solution that can prevent any accidental quits and save you a lot of time when you need it the most.
