Export the history logs for your Skype account to easy to navigate HTML files with the help of this uncomplicated command line tool #Export Skype history #Skype history log #Skype history exporter #Skype #History #Log
SkypeExport offers you the possibility to export your Skype history logs to easy to read and navigate HTML documents. The drawback is that SkypeExport does not come with a graphical user interface, and has to be controlled via the command line.
To use the SkypeExport tool, launch the Terminal application and navigate to the directory that includes the SkypeExport binary. You can do that by using the “cd” command, or you can drag and drop the containing folder on top of the Terminal Dock window.
Naturally, you get to make sure you are using the correct path by checking it in the Terminal window. The next step is to use the following command to start exporting the history logs: ./SkypeExport --db ~/Library/Application\ Support/Skype/your_username/main.db
Of course, you must place the Skype account username in the appropriate location. SkypeExport will generate a new directory named ExportedHistory, that comprises a different HTML document for each detected contact.
SkypeExport will be able to send to the HTML documents a comprehensive collection of data, starting from the content of the text messages and their formatting to the state of the messages, the state of file transfers, information about phone or conference calls, web links, time stamps, emoticons, and so on.
Even though you cannot customize the output, if you want to see all the additional exporting options that come with the tool, make sure to run the SkypeExport binary while using the “--help” command. You can limit the exporting to a 12 or 24 hours timeframe, change the output path, and more.
Bottom line, SkypeExport offers you the possibility to backup or share your Skype history logs via an easy to handle format: HTML documents.
However, the fact that SkypeExport has to run in the Terminal and be controlled by using the command line might prove challenging for inexperienced users.
What's new in SkypeExport 1.4.0:
- (Enhancement) Support for exporting Microsoft's auto-migrated "Windows Live Messenger" IDs, which are their internal, auto-created Skype IDs in the format "live:old_messenger_username" (such as "live:rince.farbgold").
- (Bug Fix) Improved conference participant scanner. People with over 1000 conferences were able to reach SQLite's database query limits. The query has now been rewritten and future-proofed to support an unlimited number of conferences.
