Older Mac OS X models might encounter performance issues when running 64bit applications: SixtyFour is a small Mac OS X app, that forces applications to run the 32bit mode, when possible. As a result, the RAM usage is reduced, which means that your computer’s performance will increase.

Upon launch, SixtyFour automatically scans you computer and identifies all the installed applications (via the Preferences window you can change the default search location).  You will be able to see the utility name, and its disk path, while in the View menu you can choose to sort them by name, or by creation or modification date.

Note that each utility has a small check box assigned: if you want to enable the 32bit mode for a certain app, verify if it is included in the appropriate list, and then check the respective box.

Within the SixtyFour’s main window, you will be able to see the list of all installed software, and you get to sort it into 32bit and 64bit lists. For your convenience, the SixtyFour app also includes a simple search that can help you find a certain app faster.

Noteworthy is that you do not have to perform diagnostics on your own: the switch between the 64bit and 32bit modes is made in a highly intuitive manner.

SixtyFour is a great addition to your software collection if you ant to increase the performance of older Mac computers: running an app in 64bit mode requires a lot of memory, so if you manage to switch to 32 bit instead, everything should run a lot better.

Each time you launch an app, the SixtyFour Agent will display a notification containing the bit mode, so you can check if you made the correct settings.
