See if an app is running natively on Apple Silicon or via Rosetta 2 emulation, directly from your menu bar, with this tiny open-source tool #App Architecture #Apple Silicon Compatibility #Rosetta 2 Emulation #Apple Silicon #Architecture #Native
The new M1-powered Macs have impressed everyone with their performance and efficiency, but there is still a long way to go until every popular app is ported to Apple Silicon. Until then, apps designed for Intel processors will run via Rosetta 2 emulation, which affects performance considerably.
Silicon Info is a small app that makes it easy to check if the application in the foreground is running natively on Apple Silicon or via Rosetta 2. One glance at the menu bar icon is all it takes, which is a lot simpler than the other methods we have available.
While Silicon Info is running, you can launch any application normally, and the indicator icon in the menu bar will show you whether it's an Intel or Apple Silicon app. You can also click the menu bar icon to see a bit more info, but the indicator shows you all you need to know
It doesn't matter if the app is an ARM exclusive or a universal binary — Silicon Info will just show you if an ARM version is available and running.
There are a few ways to check if an app has been ported to Apple Silicon, but none of them are all that convenient. For individual apps, you can right-click them and check the Get Info panel, or you can verify their architecture from Activity Monitor.
Other methods, such as generating a system report or using the storage manager, are really only suitable for checking multiple applications at once, and they are not quick by any means.
Like it or not, it will take a while for all major developers to create ARM versions of their apps. Until then, it's nice to have a simple way to check if an application is optimized for your M1 Mac or if it has to go through Rosetta 2 in order to run on your device.
