Marking files for deletion does not mean the data is instantly erased from the drive: the information remains stored until the operating system decides to write new data on top of it.

As a result, there are numerous file recovery tools out there that offer you the possibility to get back items that you have deleted by mistake. Shredo is a small utility that can help you make the recovery process harder or even impossible.

Shredo sports three types of shredding capabilities: 1-pass (the fastest option available, rewrites random bytes), 7-pass (works slower, but overwrites everything seven times using the DoD 5220-20 M algorithms), and 35-pass (the most time-consuming but also the most secure option, relies on the Gutmann deletion method).

At the same time, Shredo integrates a Privacy Scan tool that can look for browser history and cookies. The app provides support for three of the most popular web browsers (Safari, Google Chrome, and Firefox) and enables you to delete the records, which might represent a threat to your privacy.

The Shredo user interface is represented by a single panel that you get to arrange vertically or horizontally. The utility comes with drag and drop support, but you can also load files by going through the Finder menu.

Worth mentioning is that you get to load different files to each of the three presets, and then press the shredding button a single time. The Shredo will deal with the jobs without requiring additional user interaction.

Shredo comes with very few customization options, but if you go to the Settings panel, you get to see how much space you have freed up and the number of files that have been shredded. The statistics are preserved between sessions.

Bottom line, Shredo makes securely deleting content on your Mac as user-friendly as possible. Just drop the files you want to erase on top of the appropriate preset, and Shredo will handle the rest.

To make everything even more streamlined, Shredo integrates an item in the Services contextual menu, which means that you can also configure a system-wide hotkey to send files to the app.
