Window managers are particularly helpful on laptops, as it is difficult to move and resize objects with the same accuracy a mouse would allow when all you have to work with is a trackpad. They come in all shapes and sizes, but these apps normally rely on lots of keyboard shortcuts to get the job done.

Penc is a bit different, as it is designed to take advantage of your trackpad and let you move and resize windows much the same way as you would on a tablet or smartphone. It is very easy to use, and it runs only in your Mac’s menu bar.

Here’s how it works: while the app is active, and a window is selected, double press and hold down the Cmd (⌘) key. You will then be able to use various gestures to move and resize the window, as long as you keep the key pressed.

With two fingers on the trackpad, drag the window to move it and pinch to resize it, either diagonally, horizontally or vertically. By swiping quickly, you can snap the window to either one half or one quarter of the screen.

The app’s menu bar icon is the only indication that it is running. It can be launched automatically at login, and it will soon feel like just another part of the operating system.

The default modifier key is Cmd, but it can be changed from the app’s preferences. You can also customize the double press and swipe sensitivity, as well as specify how windows should be picked – the app can select either the focused window or whichever one is under the mouse cursor.

Penc is remarkably intuitive, so it shouldn’t take more than a minute to figure out how it works. If you feel that moving and resizing windows on your laptop is a bit too ungainly, you should definitely download it and give it a try.
