Renaming multiple files is a fairly common task, particularly when managing large collections of photos, music, or video files. However, macOS doesn’t really come equipped with the tools you need to get this done.
NameChanger is a free app that seeks to make this task a lot easier. It’s designed to be very simple to use, with a minimalistic user interface and intuitive controls. You can choose from a number of renaming rules, and it also includes a helpful image browser.
To get started, you can either drop your files in the main window or browse to their location. When using the latter function, you can add the entire contents of one or multiple folders at once.
The original filenames will be displayed in the left-hand column, with any modifications previewed on the right. You will be able to check that everything is correct before modifying the original files in any way.
There are multiple ways to rename your files. You can replace the first, last, or all occurrences of a certain term with something else, append or prepend content, add or remove characters, change case, insert dates or sequences, as well as use wildcards and regular expressions.
Once a rule is selected, all the necessary fields will be displayed in the interface, and you can just fill in the required information. The process is simple enough for any user to figure out easily.
When processing images, is may be necessary to see what they contain in order to figure out how to rename them. The Image Browser shows you the thumbnails of all files added to the queue, and you can also use Quick Look to get a better look at them.
If you’re looking for a quick and easy to use renaming utility, NameChanger should be perfect for the job. It can deal with all the most common file renaming scenarios, it’s completely free, and it features a very intuitive design.
