Besides a healthy dose of inspiration and the skills to write down their thoughts in an appealing manner for their readers, most writers also need a tool to help them organize the structure of the novel or article they're currently working on.
For this purpose, one can use a tool such as Story Planner, a macOS application designed to give you a helping hand to plan while going through the chapters of your new best-seller just like its name suggests.
Right after launching it on your Mac, you'll notice that Story Planner has a tab-based user interface designed to give you quick access to your story's project outline, characters, locations, plots, scenes traits.
The Story Planner app also comes with a dark mode designed to help writers who like to work in the dark avoid eye strain. This can be easily toggled on from the application's Preferences, together with the iCloud sync and the automatic backups features.
Story Planner's interface also comes with a Projects sidebar designed to allow you to switch between your writing projects rapidly at any time. The sidebar can be toggled on and off swiftly when no longer needed by clicking the sidebar button in the top left corner of the main window.
While going through Story Planner's top tabs, you will be able to organize the ideas behind your writing project, be it a novel, a screenplay, a script, or even a short story.
The app also provides you with a built-in statistics overview to get a quick glimpse of your story's number of acts, scenes, and plots, as well as the top locations and characters.
For a full rundown of all the features it comes with, you can head over to the Story Planner Features page on the app's website.
Besides being of great help for any writer who might find himself in a point of no return because he hasn't thought long enough about a character's inner goals, Story Planner still lacks a few extra touches to be the go-to utility for such a purpose.
For example, when you edit the traits of a character, location, plot, or scene, each of the text fields you can work with, from description and goals to evolution and notes, have a pre-defined size, which makes scrolling up and down while working with Story Planner a must, even when working in full-screen.
A better approach would be to have all the fields responsive to the amount of text they contain, making a lot easier to browse through the traits of various story elements.
If you're looking for a competent outlining and planning tool for a writing project of any kind, Story Planner will most definitely tick the majority of your needs for such an app.
Make sure though to bring your inspiration with you and to keep your muse close, because, from our own experience while testing it, Story Planner won't write the story for you sadly.
