A simple and well-designed Japanese Soroban simulator that enables you to perform various calculations with just a few mouse clicks #Japanese Soroban #Mac Soroban #Soroban simulator #Soroban #Japanese #Abacus
Japanese Soroban is a self explanatory abacus that can be used to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
The abacus, also known as a counting frame, is a simple calculating tool, which is widely used by traders, clerks and merchants in Africa, Asia and other parts of the world. Soroboan, is a different type of abacus developed in Japan but heavily inspired by the Chinese suanpan.
The abacus are usually made of various types of hardwoods and have different sizes. The frame of the abacus holds a series of vertical rods on which there are a number of wooden beads that can be freely moved. The main frame is divided by a beam into the upper deck and the lower deck.
Thanks to Japanese Soroban, you can virtually manipulate and use the device described above to perform basic mathematical operations and to even extract square-roots and cubic roots. Japanese Soroban also features a digital display that you can use for practice and to better understand how to use the app.
By holding the left mouse button, you can easily move multiple beads simultaneously. Japanese Soroban also enables you to display the number that corresponds to the current configuration by using the Practice mode.
What is more, Japanese Soroban offers a link to an instruction page designed to help you learn how to use a soroban. Unfortunately, Japanese Soroban does not feature keyboard shortcuts and you don’t have the option to define your own hotkey.
It would have been useful if Japanese Soroban provided sound volume controls and the option to resize the main window. Another useful feature could be an in-app button that allows us to switch between the Soroban and Practice mode without returning to the main screen of the app.
To conclude, Japanese Soroban is a lightweight and easy to control but very difficult to master counting utility that features a well-designed interface.
What's new in Japanese Soroban 1.3:
- Added a menu page with a link to the standard soroban, a practice soroban with a digital display and a direct link to a great website for abacus instruction.
- Also moved the reset button away from the abacus beads so it won't get clicked accidentally during calculations and shifted the digit markers over one bead.
- Added soothing wind chimes to the opening menu to calm you before you attempt to learn the abacus.
