This isn’t the first app to add grid-based window arrangement to macOS, which goes to show that Apple has some work to do in this regard. Until such functionality is built into the OS, we’ll have to look to third-party developers.

Lasso is one of the more intuitive window managers you will find for macOS. It uses a grid layout to arrange apps on your desktop, and it’s primarily designed to be used with the mouse. However, keyboard shortcuts can still be used to activate specific layouts.

To start with, you’ll need to define the size of the grid. Adding more rows and columns will give you more flexibility, and it’s probably a good idea on larger screens or if you work with lots of apps at the same time. Multiple monitors are supported.

When pressing ⌘+⇧+Space with a certain app selected, a window pops up where you can select multiple grid cells to define the size and position of the app window.

When making a selection in the grid system, you can choose to record it for future use. These presets will appear in the collapsible sidebar, and you can click them to arrange a window accordingly.

Alternatively, you can assign a hotkey to each layout and then activate it when an app is selected without even bringing up the Lasso window.

The app’s basic functionality is very straightforward, and the grid selection method for arranging windows is highly intuitive. There are plenty of window managers for keyboard-loving power users, but Lasso is also suitable for those who prefer using the mouse.

However, if you are a power user, you can define hotkeys for any window position, and layouts are even provided on the official website for those switching over from Rectangle or Magnet. The only issue is that managing a large collection of layouts becomes difficult in the tiny app window. Nevertheless, this makes it a flexible option for any type of user.
