Hyper (formerly known as HyperTerm) is a small macOS utility that aims to provide a better command line experience by allowing you to use multiple tabs and extend the overall capabilities by installing extensions. To learn more about the extensions API, make sure to visit the Hyper project page.
The Hyper user interface is represented by a simple window where you get to type bash commands. You can use any command that would run in the Terminal.app and get the same results.
However, since Hyper allows you to work with tabs, you get to open multiple folders or run multiple tasks at the same time, without struggling to arrange windows. Keep in mind that Hyper also allows you to work with more than one window at the same time.
On top of each tab, Hyper will just state the fact that you get to use the Bash command language, which might prove to be counterproductive: if the app cannot update the name on its own, it would be helpful if one could name the tabs to make them more easily recognizable.
If you want to customize the Hyper appearance, you need to open the ~./hyper.js file placed in your user folder. You get to change the following parameters: the font size and style, the cursor/foreground/background/border color, the padding, or the colors.
You can provide custom CSS to be included in the Hyper main window or in the terminal window. You can also set a custom shell to be used by the application when it starts a session.
Within the ~./hyper.js file you must also add the plug-ins that you want to install, and the Hyper app will show an alert when the plug-ins are deployed. The app will use the ~/.hyper_plugins folder.
To sum it all up, Hyper offers you the possibility to work with the command line and run bash commands in a minimalist interface that features tabs support.
Hyper’s appearance can be quickly customized by editing the ~./hyper.js file, and you can also deploy third-party plug-ins to improve the functionality.
