Monitor the local time in different timezones, quickly add new locations, and advance time for future scheduling, all from a simple menu bar app. #World Clock #Timezone Viewer #World Time #Timezone #Clock #Time
Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to work with people halfway around the world, and figuring out the best schedule for assignments and meetings can be tricky. Time zones are difficult to perceive intuitively, so it’s helpful to have a tool that lets you visualize them.
Hovrly is an open-source menu bar app that lets you monitor the time in various locations in a very straightforward manner. It’s minimalistic and easy to use, and it even includes a helpful slider for advancing time and checking the availability of all team members.
A couple of locations are added by default, and you can add new ones by just typing their name in the search box and pressing Enter. To remove entries, just click the button that shows up when you hover over them.
While all locations are visible in the main window, only the ones you select will be shown in the menu bar. This lets you exclude time zones that you don’t need to monitor at all times. Location names can be shown in full or abbreviated, and the time can be displayed in the 24-hour or AM/PM formats.
A particularly useful feature is the slider that can be used to advance or regress time for up to twelve hours, allowing you to check what the time will be in a different place in relation to your city.
A graphic is used to indicate whether it’s daytime or nighttime in each zone, but it would help if the interval could be customized. Also, a nice optional feature would be an indicator that highlights office hours in each location, which would help with scheduling meetings.
Hovrly does a great job, and it’s completely free and open-source to boot. Aside from some potential new features down the line, the only other aspect worth mentioning is the fact that it’s an Electron-based app. This doesn’t have to be a dealbreaker, but it does lead to a lot of disk space usage from a relatively simple app, along with less-than-optimal resource management.
