While iCloud is popular among Mac users, for obvious reasons, services like Google Drive and Dropbox are sometimes preferred, and they don’t have the same level of macOS integration. If you’re working with files from these cloud locations and local drives, things can get confusing pretty quickly.
HighTop is meant to help users simplify file management when dealing with content stored in several locations. It allows you to access your Google Drive, Dropbox, and local folders from one convenient menu bar icon, with the ability to easily transfer files as well.
To start with, you’ll need to log into Google Drive, Dropbox, or both. While HighTop can be used with just local folders as well, you’re not really getting your money’s worth if you don’t use either of these two cloud storage services.
Once that is done, and you’ve maybe added one or two folders from your local drive, you can access all of them from the menu bar. Different locations are shown separately, in a tree view, and they can be rearranged and expanded as needed.
To upload something, you can just drag the file to the menu bar icon and drop it in the desired location once the window appears. Alternatively, you can enable a drop panel, which will be shown in a specified location on your desktop when dragging a file, or only when the Fn key is held down.
To download content, just navigate to its location, or use the search function to filter out the clutter, then just drag it wherever it needs to go. The search function works across all your accounts and local folders.
HighTop is a good pick for users who struggle with file management, especially those who use Dropbox or Google Drive. It lets you access files from the cloud and certain local folders from a single panel, with the option to search for content and transfer content in both directions. Its functionality can also be personalized to a great degree, making it easier to adapt it to your preferences and workflow.
