Hashsum For Mac

Hashsum is a small OS X application that resides in your status bar and offers you the possibility to quickly hash any file by using different encryption algorithms. To activate or hide the Hashsum panel, just click on the app’s icon.

Calculating a file’s hash can help you determine if it has preserved its integrity during transfer. However, going back and forth to utilities designed to deal with the task can be time-consuming, especially if you need to handle a large number of files daily.

Hashsum takes a new approach by placing the checksum calculator in the status bar: just activate the app’s panel, drag and drop the file you want to verify, and the utility will automatically generate the hash value.

Note that the Hashsum panel remains visible on top of all other windows until you click the status bar icon again. Unfortunately, the app does not come with system-wide hotkeys, so you must rely on the mouse at all times.

Within the Hashsum main window, you get to choose the encryption algorithm you want to use when calculating the file’s hash: MD5, SHA1, or SHA256. Note that if you have loaded a file, when you switch between the various tabs, Hashsum will automatically calculate the hash value with the respective algorithm.

In the bottom area of the Hashsum panel, you get to see the file’s name and extension together with its full path. You will be able to actually observe the hash value and copy it to your clipboard by clicking on the appropriate button.

Bottom line, Hashsum can help you check the integrity of your files by quickly comparing the checksum values. However, keep in mind that Hashsum will only calculate the hash values: to compare the values you need a third-party solution.
