Iris is an inconspicuous and straightforward macOS utility created to help you protect your eyes' health by preventing eye strain (a condition also known as astenophia in medical terms) when using your Mac for extended periods of time.
The app is designed to change your monitor's color temperature and brightness settings on its own, but it can also allow you to change them manually if you need different settings than the ones it uses by default.
Iris provides you with a collection of pre-defined profiles which should make it easier to tweak the amount of blue light coming out of your display and its level of brightness for various types of activities.
The Iris app helps you rapidly switch between the app's built-in profiles with a simple mouse click via the menu it adds to your Mac's status bar upon launch.
If you want to get a closer look at what each profile and working mode does, Iris' developer provides you with detailed info on each of them on the Type and Mode help pages, on the app's support website.
When first starting on your computer, Iris will also detect your current location based on your longitude and latitude to calculate the local sunrise and sunset times, for better and more accurate brightness and color temperature tweaking.
It is important to note that although the app will know your location, according to Iris' developer, this information will never leave your computer and it will be shown in Iris' settings for your convenience only.
However, Iris does come with some flaws, seeing that during the testing period we managed to quickly find a bug where the Iris app will be closed immediately if you click the top left quit button in the Settings window instead of using the bottom left "Save and close" one.
Iris is the app to have on your Mac if you want to take care of your eyes and prevent eye fatigue if you use your computer each day for both work and entertainment.
Moreover, it allows you to manage your monitor's brightness and color temperature on your own, but it can also tweak them automatically depending on the time of day using your Mac's current location.
