Duplicate Detective is a straightforward tool for detecting and removing duplicate content that takes up storage space unnecessarily.

The Duplicate Detective utility comes with a robust search algorithm that will handle the scanning procedure in no time, powerful filtering options, and batch deletion capabilities.

Right off the bat, Duplicate Detective prompts you for the directory you want to clean up. Either go through the Finder menu or resume to dragging and dropping the respective folder on top of the Duplicate Detective main window.

Duplicate Detective enables you to monitor the scanning process and lets you know how many files have been scanned, the number of duplicates that have been detected, and the total storage space allocated for them before directing you to the results list.

The Duplicate Detective algorithm is able to work with all types of files and can get the job done quite fast. On a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 6GB of RAM, Duplicate Detective was able to scan an 11GB folder comprising 1650 items, 350 of them having duplicates, in less than a minute.

Within the Duplicate Detective Results window, you get to sort the files by size, type, name, count, or selection state. The list can be ordered either ascending or descending, and you get to automatically select the oldest or the newest files.

Via the Duplicate Detective Preferences you get to set a default auto selection rule, but you can also adjust the lower size limit for scanning files so you won’t waste time and resources dealing with really small files.

Duplicate Detective proposes an efficient solution for finding, sorting, and deleting duplicate files. Note that you get to make multiple selections in the results list and then press the Remove button only once.

Duplicate Detective will ask for confirmation before deleting files as a precaution, but ultimately it is left to the user to make sure the right items are marked for removal.
