Display Maid is an OS X app created to provide you with a neat solution to one of the oldest workflow problems in our book: saving one’s windows’ position and restoring them later when a certain window configuration is needed.
The Display Maid utility can also be used if you often connect and disconnect external displays to and from your Mac because, quite frequently, this means that your windows will fly around between desktops, thus sending on a time consuming hunt for your apps.
Moreover, Display Maid is designed from the ground up to help you effortlessly save window configurations so that you can restore that configuration simply and easily, at a later time.
The configurations saved by Display Maid are named workspaces and they are incorporate all of your apps’ windows positions. Each workspace you create can be associated with a Network location of your choice so that, when you connect an external display to you Mac, Display Maid will automatically load the workspace tied to that display’s location.
Display Maid also takes advantage of your Network Locations list to automatically launch different sets of apps of your choice, that you’ve previously linked to each of the profiles on your list.
Once you’ve got all your windows setup just the way you need them, all you’ve got to do to save the workspace is to go to Display Maid’s menu bar item and click the “Save Windows for this Space” or “Save Windows for all Spaces”, depending on your needs.
Once saved, a workspace will automatically be restored when your Mac is in one of the previously setup locations or manually with the help of the “Restore Windows” menu entries.
While we’ve used it on your Macs, it worked flawlessly but, considering the fact that even the app’s developer lists a number of apps that cause problems (i.e. Microsoft Entourage, Twitter and Sibelius), Display Maid might or might not be able to control all your apps windows, depending on the apps you use.
When used on a system with compatible apps that can be tracked, Display Maid does a marvelous job. That being so, if you’re looking for a tool to help you “train” your windows into submission, Display Maid can be the app you want.
