Lightweight but capable menu bar weather app that gives you all the information you need without a cumbersome UI, with support for multiple locations. #Weather App #Temperature Monitor #Weather Forecast #Weather #Temperature #Forecast
The macOS weather widget is decent, but it provides limited information, and it doesn't compare to a minimalistic menu bar weather monitor. It's not surprising that weather apps are still popular, but some get a bit too complex for their own good.
Dear Sun finds the right balance between offering detailed information and keeping everything nice and tidy. It can display temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind speed/direction, and the UV index for multiple locations, via an unobtrusive menu bar icon. It also provides hourly and daily forecasts.
You'll find the app in the menu bar after installing. You can choose which readings are displayed, depending on what you're interested in. Temperature and relative humidity are the most useful, and wind speed can be helpful as well. Or you can just keep things simple and get rid of everything but the temperature.
Multiple locations can be added, and you can switch between them by clicking the menu bar icon. The app doesn't use location services to figure out where you are, which is great for privacy-minded users. Of course, that means you'll need to add your location(s) manually.
The app looks and works great. It's discreet and very easy to use, and it provides enough information for the vast majority of users. However, if you don't have a Pro subscription, only temperature readings will be available. More importantly, though, the refresh interval is limited to 2 hours, which is quite a long time.
Of course, it makes sense why a subscription is encouraged, as weather APIs can be quite costly. The pricing is very reasonable, so you're definitely getting a lot of value for your money.
Dear Sun is great if you want a weather app that doesn't look out of place. It integrates seamlessly into the OS while offering plenty of functionality. The free plan is rather limited, but the paid plan is absolutely worth the price.
