Compute for Humanity is an open source project that aims to help you donate your computer’s unused processing power to various charities.
The Compute for Humanity app works in the background and generates cryptocurrency that will be exchanged for US dollars and distributed to an organization of your choice.
The best part about Compute for Humanity is that there are no configuration details that have to be handled by the user. Once launched, the app will use a small amount of your Mac’s processing power to solve math and generate cryptocurrencies.
Compute for Humanity is using a cryptocurrency mining script, yet the user interaction is resumed to a simple status bar menu that allows you to see how much money has been donated so far, and how many sparkling hearts you have accumulated or donated.
Via the Compute for Humanity menulet you get to pause the generator if you need all the processing power, or choose to allocate more in order to get more sparkling hearts faster.
Compute for Humanity comes with a rewards system that keeps track of what you have achieved so far: when you reach 10 awards, you can input your contact details to get a surprise package by mail.
Compute for Humanity offers you the possibility to select the organization to which you want to send the sparkling hearts: GlobalGiving, GiveDirectly, Watsi, or Pencil of Promise.
Compute for Humanity offers you the possibility to mine and donate cryptocurrency by making use of your computer's unused processing power.
During our test, on a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 6GB RAM, Compute for Humanity required about 2% or the CPU power and around 17MB or RAM.
