Cloud-based apps are more numerous than ever, with the obvious advantage of easy accessibility and synchronization. However, you do sacrifice some privacy, which is why local-only apps are still in demand.
Beaver Notes is one of these. It’s an open-source, cross-platform app that helps you write and organize your notes via a minimalistic interface, with lots of features for formatting text and managing notes. It also gives you the option to sync files using third-party file hosting services.
From the get-go, Beaver Notes is very pleasant to work with. The interface takes only a few seconds to wrap your head around, featuring a classic layout that puts everything you need within reach.
All formatting tools are available in the toolbar, allowing you to insert various Markdown elements, tables, images, links, and so on. You can write your notes using Markdown, and the output will be generated automatically.
Navigational tools are visible in the sidebar, which can be hidden while in Focus mode; in this mode, the toolbar will still be accessible on hover.
Writing notes is straightforward, and you have more than enough features at hand to structure them the way you like and include useful media.
To organize them, you can add tags anywhere in the note, which will group notes that share identical tags. Moreover, you can add links to other notes to connect those that are somehow related.
In the interest of privacy, it’s also possible to lock certain notes behind a password. This can be especially helpful if you want to sync your notes and want to be extra cautious.
Considering the app is also available on Windows and Linux, you may want to sync notes between multiple machines. To do this, you can set the sync path to a folder used by a cloud storage service and export your notes manually when you’ve made any changes.
Except for the fact that it’s Electron-based, there's nothing bad I can say about Beaver Notes. It’s easy to use, packed with clever features, and great for those who want a free note-taking app that doesn’t rely on a cloud service.
