Whenever you are installing applications that are not sandboxed, the utilities are placing supporting and preferences files within the Library folder. Unfortunately, these items are left behind if you simply move the binary to the trash.
App Uninstaller is a small OS X utility that scans your computer for installed apps and also detects their associated files. Note that you must give to the App Uninstaller utility the permission to access your home folder and Applications directory.
The App Uninstaller workflow is organized just like a setup assistant: you get to see the list of apps, select the ones you want to remove, and then confirm the action. In some cases, you will have to authorize the process by providing the user password.
Within the App Uninstaller main window, you get to see the app’s name, the installation date, and size. You can choose to sort the entries by name, size, last opened, ascending or descending.
If you select an entry, App Uninstaller will also provide the last opened date, and let you know if it has been deployed from the App Store or not.
For each installed utility, App Uninstaller will determine the associated binaries, preferences or supporting files, and display the related logs, arranged into groups. To remove any of them, just make sure to tick their associated check box.
Worth mentioning is that each of the listed items comes with its own check box, so you get to decide if you want to remove it or not (for example, you get to preserve the preferences files for a later installation). To save time, you get to select all the entries in a category with a single mouse click.
To sum up, App Uninstaller proposes a simple solution for making sure any of the utilities installed on your system is removed without producing junk files.
However, during our tests, at least in one case, a third party solution designed to deal with the same issue found resources items left behind after the App Uninstaller ran the cleanup process.
