Monitor local air quality from your menu bar, and view details about particulates, temperature, pressure, and humidity with a single click #Air Quality #Airly App #Air Pollution #Airly #Pollution #Air
Airly is a Polish startup that has engineered a worldwide network of air quality sensors, which can be purchased and installed by individuals, as well as businesses. They provide independent readings for air particulate count and harmful gasses, readings that can be integrated into various platforms via a free API.
Airqmon is one of the apps that takes advantage of said API. It shows real-time air quality readings in the menu bar, from the nearest available sensor. The app requires no configuration — just install it and check the readings in your menu bar.
Airly sensors come in several variations — some measure only particulate matter, while others track harmful gas concentrations as well. Airqmon seems to only show PM readings, but the majority of available sensors don't gather info about gas concentrations anyway.
Based on PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 concentrations (particles smaller than 1, 2.5, and 10 micrometers), the service calculates an air quality index that indicates how polluted the atmosphere is in your location; this is the value displayed in the menubar, and you can click the icon to see additional info. The local temperature, pressure, and humidity are also displayed here.
After launching Airqmon, there's really nothing else to configure. The app detects your location and finds the nearest Airly sensor automatically. However, it would be nice to have the option to select a different sensor, should you want to monitor air quality in another location.
The app can also display notifications when your location or the air quality index changes, but these alerts can be disabled if you prefer. The default update interval is 5 minutes, which should be suitable for everyone, but you can increase it to 15 or 30 minutes.
Airqmon is a very simple application, but it does exactly what most users need — it provides real-time local air quality readings in an unobtrusive manner. If you're concerned about pollution in your area, it's a great app to pick up.
