There are many workflows that would benefit from having a detailed record of all modifications made to certain files, and a way to return to a specific version of said files if needed.

Versions is a very simple app that provides you with a straightforward versioning system anyone can put to use instantly. It’s very easy to set up and can be completely automated or controlled manually.

To get started, just add one or more files. The first version will be stored in the database, and additional versions will be created and saved as soon as any modifications are made to the file. You can go back and access any of these at any time.

The database can either be left in its default location or moved somewhere else. If you like, you can move it to a cloud sync folder and use something like iCloud, Dropbox, or Google Drive to store backups in the cloud.

While Time Machine is a great feature, it isn’t ideal for every scenario. It requires a separate drive to store backups, and you can’t just track one or two files and ignore everything else. You can add exceptions, but it’s mostly intended for large scale backups.

Versions is designed to be quick and simple. It only monitors the files you add, it doesn’t require a separate drive, and if you want to have complete control, you can even disable automatic backups and create new versions of each file manually.

On the whole, this app is ideal for any scenario that requires tracking versions and storing backups of specific files. It’s easy to use, lightweight, and not exactly pricy if you go for the full version, which you’re going to need to do if you plan on monitoring more than one file at a time.
