A more user-friendly alternative to the Unix df command, which lists the available disk space on all installed devices from the Terminal. #Disk Usage #Df Alternative #Free Space #Disk #Usage #Df
The df command is available on all Unix-based operating systems, and it provides the user with a detailed overview of used and available disk space on all mounted disks. While very useful, the output isn't particularly easy to read.
duf is a cross-platform utility that serves as a more intuitive alternative to df. It's still a command-line tool, but it delivers a more readable output, which can be customized via arguments in order to filter or sort the results.
As with all Terminal utilities, simplicity is key. If you run it with no arguments, duf will list all available volumes, their size, type, used, and free disk space. The output is shown in a table and color-coded for better readability. It also adjusts based on the Terminal window's theme and width.
To customize the output, you will need to use one or more arguments. For a list of all supported arguments, check out the project's GitHub page. The data can even be displayed as JSON.
There are several ways to control the utility's output. You can have it list only certain devices and mount points, hide specific tables, filesystems, and mount points, as well as sort the data by various parameters. You can also hide columns you aren't interested in.
If the utility doesn't detect your system's Terminal theme, you can set it manually. What's more, the thresholds used to highlight certain values in red, green, or yellow can be changed.
It's worth noting that duf is also available for Windows, where, of course, the Unix df command isn't supported. If you use multiple operating systems on a regular basis, it will be nice to have the same tools on all your systems.
duf is a great utility for users who need a simple but intuitive way to get disk usage information in Terminal, with a customizable output.
