Open-source menu bar utility that helps keep your MacBook's battery healthy by limiting its maximum charge level to a user-defined value. #Charge Limiter #Battery Health #Battery Charge #Battery #MacBook #Charge
Lithium-ion batteries, like the ones still used in MacBooks, degrade faster when kept fully charged or discharged for prolonged periods. Unfortunately, desktop laptops that are always connected to power tend to stay at 100% charge for days and weeks, which obviously isn’t ideal.
batteryKid is one of the many apps that have been developed to help with this issue. It’s open-source, free, and features a simple design, with two operating modes that can be controlled from the menu bar. It allows you to limit the battery level to a user-defined value.
In practice, you can use Lite mode, which handles everything automatically and tries to keep the battery level as close as possible to a certain value, or Pro mode, which allows you to toggle the two switches manually (it may take a few seconds for the charging status to be updated). For Lite mode, you can also set the maximum deviation from the defined value.
It’s worth noting that a helper needs to be installed in order to provide the required functionality. This helper is installed automatically, but isn’t uninstalled when you remove the app. To delete it from your system, you need to follow the steps outlined on the project’s GitHub page.
