Simple utility for quickly launching macOS virtual machines, with a lightweight design, no user interface, and negligible resource impact #Run VM #Open VM #Run Virtual Machine #Virtual Machine #VM #Run
There are a bunch of different apps you can use to create macOS virtual machines and run them, but these solutions don’t often provide a way to instantly launch a VM you’ve created without opening another UI first.
Vimy is a very small utility intended to be used with virtual machines that have already been created with Viable or other software that uses the standard .bundle format designed by Apple. It allows you to launch a VM by just double-clicking the package, using the Open command, or by dragging it to the Dock icon.
If you use a virtual machine daily, and maybe even have to restart it frequently, launching it can take longer than you would like with most VM solutions. What you need is a simple shortcut that starts it up without needing an additional UI.
While not essential, the app is best used in conjunction with Viable, which enables you to create virtual machines and save them in a proprietary format that is also supported by Vimy.
VMs using the .bundle and .vimi formats can be associated with Vimy, which will let you launch them by just double-clicking the bundles. The .vimi format is used only by Viable, so it’s safe to set Vimy as the default app for opening it. The .bundle format is used for other purposes as well, so you may run into issues if other types of bundles are opened with Vimy.
As a result, it may be a better idea to open .bundle VMs using the app’s Open command or by dropping the package onto the Vimy Dock icon.
There are no other features to mention, since it will try to use settings saved inside the bundle. However, if these can’t be found, it will resort to a set of default settings that should be suitable in most cases. You can edit the Settings.plist file in the archive and place it in the VM bundle to configure different default settings for your virtual machine.
Vimy works great as a companion app for Viable, but it’s also suitable for other types of VMs saved as .bundle packages. It allows you to open them much faster, with the ability to change the default settings used to run them.
