After spending thousands of dollars on a laptop, you’re probably expecting a reliable product, but that’s not what many MacBook and MacBook Pro users have experienced after buying one of the latest models. One of the most common issues affecting these devices is the “double key press” which results in two or multiple hits being registered when a key was only pressed once.

A hardware solution is to get your device repaired, but this can cost hundreds of dollars. Thankfully, Unshaky now offers a software solution as well. Essentially, it tries to detect unintentional key presses and prevent more than one from being registered at the same time.

2016 or later MacBook and MacBook Pro models use the new butterfly keyboard designed by Apple. Their unique switches allow for a thinner keyboard and laptop, but they are not without issues. From unresponsiveness to key repeats, it was enough for Apple to launch a free keyboard service program.

If you haven’t managed to get your device fixed, or if it’s still causing issues, Unshaky might provide a simple and free solution.

The app’s functionality is very simple: after pressing a key, any subsequent input from the same key within a certain time frame will be ignored. Since we’re only human, no one is likely to press the same key twice within 40 milliseconds. If you’re one of the few who are capable of that, you can just lower the delay.

Usually, only one or two keys will have this issue, and the application allows you to set a custom delay for each of them. If three or more presses are registered when you press a key, an “Agressive mode” can also be enabled from the settings.

When it comes down to it, you have nothing to lose by trying out this little app. There is a very good chance it will make your MacBook’s keyboard usable again, and you don’t even have to send your laptop in for repairs or pay a ridiculous fee in the process.
