As with many things Apple, Time Machine is a well-designed, intuitive feature that allows you to set up easy backups with minimal oversight. It requires little to no attention from the end user, but it also lacks customization and provides limited details.

TimeMachineStatus is an open-source app that aims to give you a bit more information about what’s going on. It runs in the menu bar and provides helpful info at a glance, with some simple controls and scheduling options planned for future releases.

Once the app is running, you’ll be able to see what actions are currently being undertaken by just looking at the menu bar. To get more details, click the icon. You’ll see all your backup destinations and the progress of any operations, along with general information about the volume and Time Machine settings.

You can start a backup to any chosen volume directly from TimeMachineStatus, and the appearance of the menu bar item can be customized to an extent — namely the amount of padding, background color, font, and status display.

More features are planned for the future, such as additional information shown in the menu bar and the ability to schedule backups for specific times instead of just choosing the preferred interval.
