Swift Quit For Mac

macOS has some quirks when compared to other operating systems, and one of them is the way it handles apps and windows. Closing an app’s last window won’t normally quit the app itself; it will continue to run in the background, just with no active windows.

Swift Quit makes it so that closing an app’s last window, or even any of its windows, will automatically quit the app. This is more similar to how things are done on Windows, and it may make the transition easier for users who are switching to macOS.

It’s really quite simple. When an application’s last window is closed, the entire app will now be shut down, just like if you were using Cmd+Q. This works regardless of whether you clicked the red button or used Cmd+W to close the window.

Alternatively, it’s possible to configure Swift Quit so that apps are closed whenever any of their windows are closed. While this feature may be handy for specific use cases, it isn’t recommended for most.

You’re probably going to have to exclude some apps to avoid inconveniences. For instance, if an application opens a pop-up on launch but has no other active windows, it will quit when you close the pop-up. Thankfully, you can easily add as many exceptions as you need.

Of course, since some apps don’t have active windows, Swift Quit’s normal functionality won’t work. However, you can close all windowless apps manually from the menu bar. You can also access the app’s settings from here.

If you’ve been a Mac user for a while, you’re likely already accustomed to how Apple does things. But if you’re coming from Windows and would really like apps to stop running when no active windows are left, Swift Quit could make the switch to macOS a bit less daunting.
