Unix-based operating systems come with a useful command-line tool called lsof (list open files). As the name suggests, the utility lists all open files, as well as directories, sockets, pipes, and devices in use by processes on your system.
Sloth is an open-source app that acts as a GUI for lsof, making the tool a lot easier to use and providing additional conveniences.
Whether you need it for professional use or you just want to inspect certain processes for whatever reason, this app shows you everything said processes have accessed, just like the lsof tool.
All gathered data is displayed in an outline view, which can be filtered and searched. You can click an item to get more info about it, navigate to its location in Finder, or kill a process.
The list is only refreshed manually by default, but you can configure the app to refresh automatically at a selected interval as well.
There are many ways to sift through data in Sloth. You can specify which types of items should be displayed, sort them by name, process count, ID, type, and bundle identifier, as well as search for specific terms.
Entries can quickly be expanded or collapsed, which makes scrolling through the extensive list a lot easier when you're trying to find something in particular.
Speed and performance are always going to be important with such tools, and Sloth won't disappoint, contrary to its name. The app is written in native code, so it is quick and light on resources.
If you want the power of lsof in a GUI, Sloth is just what you need. It offers the same functionality in a more intuitive package, making it suitable for anyone trying to obtain information about running processes.
