Although Apple’s Mail has been known to be almost always stable and to work as expected in most situations, after the OS X 10.9 Mavericks upgrade there were a lot of users reporting problems when using their Gmail accounts.
According to claims on Apple’s Discussions website, Mail was having difficulties displaying a correct unread e-mails count and various issues when the users where either moving, deleting or archiving e-mails using custom Gmail settings.
Mail.app users where experiencing overall stability and compatibility issues when using it to read their Gmail messages.
The Mail Update for Mavericks has been designed by Apple to come with fixes for all the problems listed above, together with fixes for other issues that may cause OS stability problems.
