Turn Caps Lock into a hyper key that can be used for shortcuts, or remap it to various other functions, with support for trackpad activation. #Hyper Key #Rebind Caps Lock #Key Remapper #Hyper #Caps Lock #Rebind
The Caps Lock key doesn't see much use on most people's keyboards, prompting some to think of a new purpose for it. Binding it to Esc is quite popular, but one other option is to turn it into a hyper key — a modifier that combines ⌃⌥⌘⇧ and allows you to use new shortcuts in applications that support custom hotkeys.
Hyperkey provides you with an easy way to rebind your Caps Lock key, as well as additional customization options and support for activating the hyper key using your trackpad.
Outside of a few use cases, most people don't really need the Caps Lock key. However, it occupies valuable real estate, so you might want to put it to better use.
Most easily accessible combinations of keys and modifiers are already used for app-specific or global shortcuts, which can make it difficult to create new hotkeys for things you want to do.
A hyper key, which combines all other modifiers, makes things a lot easier, as there are virtually no shortcuts that consist of all four modifiers and other keys. Thus, you can create new hotkeys that require only two key presses and aren't used by anything else.
Hyperkey keeps things very simple. Just access the app's settings and select that Caps Lock should be remapped to. You can make any modifier into a hyper key, bind Caps Lock to something else, and even make a quick press trigger Esc or the standard Caps Lock functionality.
What's more, you can customize the hyper key in a few ways. You can exclude Shift from the modifiers, swap Option and Cmd on third-party keyboards, and also add other actions such as clicking and dragging.
If you can't afford to lose the key's standard function, MacBook users have another option. Using a simple sliding gesture, you can trigger the modifiers, then press another key in the combination and take your hand off the trackpad to activate.
In short, Hyperkey makes the process of rebinding Caps Lock and creating a hyper key very straightforward and provides additional functionality, such as trackpad support and extended customization.
What's new in Hyperkey 0.28:
- For some users, the hyper key remapping would stop working after a period of time and just execute the command key. This should now be fixed.
